Kumon FAQs

Click the following questions below to see the answer.

What is Kumon?

Kumon is the world’s largest after-school math and reading enrichment program. The Kumon Program unlocks the potential of children so they can achieve more on their own. It allows students of all ages and abilities to build the skills necessary to have a richer, more successful education experience. It is also a place where your children will be motivated to achieve more by gaining a sense of accomplishment that fosters a desire to learn more.

Is my child the right age for Kumon?

Children may enroll as early as preschool, and students throughout primary and secondary schools attend Kumon. Kumon encourages getting an early start so that your children can begin developing the necessary skills to fully reach their true potential.

Is Kumon an “enrichment” program or a “remedial” program?

A Kumon Program can be tailored for advanced students who need to be challenged and for students who need help catching up. Our ultimate goal is for all students to study above their grade level, so our academic enrichment program gives them ample opportunities to achieve more.

Why is Kumon such an effective complement to my child’s schooling?

At school, students are required to advance as a group, but Kumon gives your children the ability to govern their own progress and excel at their own pace.

At what level do students begin the program?

Kumon will assess each child’s ability with a free placement test and then determine a proper starting level. Starting at the correct level helps prevent each student from getting discouraged early on and allows him or her to grow and feel comfortable with each assignment.

How soon will I see results from Kumon?

Some children progress very rapidly, while others might take a bit longer to fully grasp a certain concept. At Kumon, we view education as an ongoing process. We encourage you to keep your children enrolled for at least six months to a year to truly appreciate the effectiveness of the program. Many children stay with Kumon for years thereafter.

How does Kumon differ from tutoring?

Unlike tutoring, which is more of a short-term solution, Kumon allows students to absorb the information on their own through Kumon’s self-learning technique. This way, children develop the skills and study habits needed to improve their academic performance. These are the skills that your children can carry with them as they grow, progress and continue to learn.

Why does the Kumon Program include repetition of material?

Repetition is precisely what reinforces and ensures that children fully understand and remember the material they’ve covered. It’s a basic skill that will help them throughout their entire academic careers.

Is there a huge time commitment with Kumon?

Kumon is an easy and efficient academic enrichment program. Most students attend Kumon just twice a week while completing brief (approximately a half-hour per subject) at-home assignments throughout the rest of the week.

Does Kumon offer preparation for standardized tests?

Kumon specializes in nurturing the skills that improve all aspects of academic performance, including test-taking. With Kumon’s timed assignments, your children will quickly become accustomed to working under test-taking conditions, and developing key time-management and problem-solving skills. Kumon Students are some of the best-prepared for major standardized exams like the SAT.
