Empowering Your Child through Reading
“I am very impressed with the quality of the literature in the Kumon Reading Program. My daughter hasn’t just improved her reading ability; she’s also learned all about different religions, the galaxy and various constellations, different ways of life, cultural traditions, geography, and so on. That plus the comprehension training is a big, big help with many school subjects.” – Maria, Kumon Mom from Saskatoon, SK, Canada
As discussed in the “Learning One Step at a Time” blog post, the Kumon Program initially began with a focus on the study of mathematics. However, one of the principal goals when Toru Kumon developed the Kumon Method was to increase his son’s vocabulary and instill a love of reading. Toru Kumon states, “From the beginning, one of the important goals of the Kumon Method has always been to nurture children who enjoy reading books.” He continues, “In order to raise children with high abilities, it is essential that we help them to acquire ample vocabularies and an advanced level of reading.” With that notion in mind, the Kumon Program expanded to include the study of reading in addition to mathematics.
Similar to the Kumon Math Program, the Kumon Reading Program is a step-by-step academic program designed to provide each student with the skills necessary to tackle high school and college-level materials. The Kumon Reading Program begins at a very basic level, where a student looks at words and sentences, hears the words being pronounced correctly, and practices repeating what he or she hears. As the student progresses through the program, he or she will learn the sounds of individual letters and letter combinations. This eventually begins the development of sentence-building skills, understanding paragraphs, and summarizing and critiquing elements of a literary text. In essence, the Kumon Reading Program is designed to help your child build his or her critical thinking skills from the very beginning. As Toru Kumon said, “Through language education and abundant reading experiences, our children come to know that they are surrounded by all kinds of different words, people, and ideas. Furthermore, reading books provides children with opportunities to think for themselves, come to know themselves, and broaden their own horizons.” To help your child begin his or her path towards developing a life-long love of reading, locate a Kumon Center near you.
