About the Instructor

Hi, I'm Susan Howell, Owner and Director of the Albuquerque Kumon Math and Reading Center.  Welcome to our Albuquerque Center web-page.

As an extensively trained and certified professional instructor, I serve as a mentor who guides your children through their work while also providing direction, support and encouragement. I create an at-home study plan in addition to monitoring classroom assignments, and I emphasize the importance of accurately completing each assignment within a designated time frame. This has helped many of my students increase self-confidence, thus becoming more self-reliant. Like all Kumon Instructors, I have a true passion for education and an earnest desire to help children succeed.

I have served the Albuquerque area as a Kumon Instructor since 1997.  However, my total history of serving children and families spans over 41 years.  I attended Illinois State University on a gymnastics scholarship.  Since then, my love of children and gymnastics led me to start up multiple gymnastics and dance centers serving the physical development needs of children.  I made a slight career change in 1997 to focus on helping children meet their academic development needs by joining Kumon as an instructor/franchise owner.  With Kumon, I have helped thousands of children in the Albuquerque area discover and reach their academic potential.

My husband and I live in Albuquerque, and our blended family consists of six grown children and four grandsons.

I have had the opportunity to present at Kumon North America's regional instructor and staff conferences, and I've been a speaker at the Kumon International World Brand Task Force.  A highlight of my Kumon career was serving for two years on the Instructor Advisory Council. 

As a fully-licensed Kumon Instructor, continuing education is a requirement and top priority.  I regularly attend Kumon Branch meetings in Phoenix, Kumon North America Instructor Conferences, and seminars offered through Kumon University, to glean new ideas for constantly improving the service I provide to my Albuquerque Kumon students.  I've studied extensively under the tutelage of high-level trainers from the Toru Kumon Research Institute of Osaka, Japan.  In addition to hosting instructors who have visited my center, I visit other successful Kumon centers across North America to observe and garner fresh approaches to help my students reach their full potential.
