Amila Haque
Amila Haque started the Kumon Reading program when she was just four years old in Strongsville, Ohio. Moving to Allen, Texas, she enrolled in Kumon math. Amila progressed in Kumon, and went ahead of her classmates. She read her first chapter book in kindergarten. “The kids ran up to the teacher and told her that I was reading a chapter book”, Amila said “I was confused. I didn’t know I did something special.”
Also at that time, Amila started to read books from Kumon’s recommended reading list. “At first I was annoyed. It seemed like my dad was forcing me to read certain books,” said Amila “then I realized that these books were actually some of the best books I ever read, such as A Wrinkle in Time and Old Yeller.” Amila progressed quite well in math, doing long division in second grade and fractions in third. She reached the reading G by 5th grade status on February 7th of 2011, while still being in 3rd grade.
“I sometimes got frustrated in the higher levels, such as level K and L while I was doing advanced reading comprehension, but my parents always explained the concepts to me, so that I understood it,” said Amila “Without my parents, I probably could have not completed the Kumon reading program.”
Amila finished the Kumon reading program in the February of 2012, while she was in 4th grade.
Amila enjoys the benefits of finishing the Kumon reading. “Now I can focus on my math,” said Amila, “I love being able to help my classmates. Being advanced in reading and math helps in other subjects”. She loves to read and is usually found reading in a quiet area. Amila is thankful for her Kumon instructor and her parents' help. “Some kids think that Kumon is something that their parents force them into,” said Amila “But really, it's for their own good. I wish everyone could enjoy the benefits of Kumon like I do.”
It took Amila 1002 days to reach Kumon reading program G by 5th grade status after she transferred in to Allen-East Center on May 28, 2008. She was in Kindergarten. It took Amila an additional 378 days to reach Reading Completer status after she reached G. She is currently in 4th grade.
She also meets one of our center's Reading Completer requirements, turning in at least 5 book reports from Kumon Recommended Reading List Level L book list. She is continuing in the Kumon Math program and reached Kumon math program G by 5th grade status on May 10, 2012.
