How Kumon works:
We start with a placement test for each student who wants to enroll at the Centre. This placement test gives them a “comfortable starting point” in the Kumon curriculum. This test is not a reflection of child’s ability but is a tool used by us to start their Kumon learning at a comfortable point in our curriculum.
Students progress at their own pace. For instance, two students in the same grade level can start at the same level in Kumon but will progress differently through the months depending on their individual potential and work skills. At any given point, we strive to keep students challenged but not overwhelmed with the amount or complexity of work.
Students don’t move on to the next one until they demonstrate a complete understanding of the previous concept. Students practice new concept through worksheet study. The Kumon staff are there to help them understand and learn from their mistakes. Material is repeated until they know it well. Retention is the goal and an important part of the Kumon process. The Kumon instructor plans for and follows student progress every step of the way.
Daily practice is an important part of Kumon. Students are given assignments for every day. The daily Kumon is expected to be finished under an hour with most students taking 30-40mins to finish it.
Kumon is a long-term program. At this Centre, we have Grade 4 students doing high school Math and Reading. However, they started when they were in kindergarten. The longer students remain in the program, the more they benefit from it and get ahead in it. Please consider keeping your child in the program for at least a year to see benefits of the program.
