Josie’s Story

Josie

Josie is 10-years-old, studying three years above her grade level in the Kumon Program. In fact, she’s studying the same math material that her mom, who is an eighth grade teacher, teaches her students. Imagine that, a 10-year-old transforming equations, working with linear functions and simplifying monomials and polynomials. She’s well on her way to advanced algebraic expressions and she isn’t even in middle school yet.

One of the things that Josie likes most about Kumon is the fact that she’s studying above her grade level.

“Kumon gives me confidence because I know how strong of a student it has made me,” says Josie. “I know that I can do and learn anything if I do the work and practice daily. Kumon has taught me about the importance of focusing and to not be afraid of challenges, but to enjoy them and work through them because I know I can overcome anything.”

Josie embodies everything that Toru Kumon had in mind when he founded the Kumon Method. He felt that students would experience the true benefits of the Kumon Method if they acquired the study habits necessary for self-learning and advanced study.

Evelyn's journey to J by 6 and beyond!

Evelyn

Evelyn is going into 8th grade and is in both the math and reading program at the Kumon of Houston - West University. She is on track to finishing the last level of the Kumon mathematics program!

She says that one of her favorite parts about Kumon is that it has allowed her to discover her potential and use it to hone her skills in both math and reading.

“Every single day, it supplies me with the motivation to push myself further beyond my limits than ever before,” says Evelyn. “Kumon has also reinforced my confidence in my academic learning and achievements.”

Her biggest advice for Kumon students in the math program is to constantly challenge mathematical concepts and maximize the usage of logical thinking in everyday life. For reading students she said, “Keep the saying, "Rome wasn't built in a day" in mind because it takes time to improve on anything, especially with literature and language arts, but even if progress seems stagnant, it will get better with patience and determination.”

Although Evelyn isn’t too sure of what she wants to pursue when she’s older, she says she wants to use her knowledge for the benefit of others by working in healthcare to give people a new chance at life, but she is also interested in designing and developing new software in computer science to further advance technology.

“No matter which career I choose, I will always strive to be the very best I can be and better.”
