Alan – Kumon Math and Reading G by 4, J by 6, and Student Conference attendee
Alan reached Kumon Level G by 4 in both Math and Reading. He is currently a 4th grader working on Math Level I and Reading Level GI. G by 4 stars are given to enrolled Kumon students who start studying Algebra before the end of their 4th grade year. Alan started the program in 1st grade. Alan and his family are very committed to his Kumon study and he rarely misses class. The family always arrange to pick up work for missed class. This has been a key success factor in Alan’s Kumon studies. Kumon has helped Alan understand school work better, do math calculation faster and feel more confident in school. I can’t wait for Alan to receive his J by 6 awards!
Update: Alan successfully reached Level J in math Jan, 2018. Congratulations on getting the J by 6 globe as a 4th grader!
2018 Kumon Student Conference attendee (Alan's story)
There are many things that keep Alan motivated. He has short term goals of completing the next level in Kumon. He has long-term goals of completing the entire Kumon Math and Reading Program before high school. He has a dream of becoming an architect someday, which he’ll need strong math skills in order to achieve.
But there’s also something else that motivates Alan. Something that the average person may not even realize. Because Alan is studying several years above his grade level in Kumon, a lot of his classmates turn to him for help at school. Alan says it gives him a sense of pride and inspires him to work even harder.
“It’s humbling to have my friends come to me for help,” says Alan. “This feeling motivates me to work even harder so my friends can always trust me. When I help my friends, I look at it as an opportunity for me to learn how to convey the same concept indifferent ways because each person learns differently.”
That’s a very mature thought process for someone who is only 10-years-old. Because of his accomplishments both in-and-out of the classroom, Alan was just one of 56 Kumon Students from the United States, Canada and Mexico to be invited to the 2018 Kumon Student Conference held in Calgary, Canada.
He talks about his journey with Kumon.
How has Kumon helped you in the classroom?
Thanks to Kumon, I no longer feel frustrated with difficult questions. Because of the determination I have developed, I know that I will eventually solve the problem. Kumon has helped me advance beyond my grade level. I’m able to finish my schoolwork faster, which allows me more time to participate in other activities.
How has Kumon helped you beyond academics?
Kumon has surely trained me to face challenges without fears. Although I love challenges, studying above my grade level is not always easy. Perseverance is the first lesson I learned from Kumon. It taught me to never give up. Additionally, Kumon has guided me to gain self-confidence. When I believe in myself, I can do just about anything I want. In Kumon, I also learned to not be afraid of making mistakes. You would never learn anything if you are always perfect. Practicing daily and learning from mistakes is Kumon’s main idea to success.
What keeps you motivated in Kumon?
Reaching my goals keeps me motivated in Kumon. The satisfaction of achieving goals boosts my confidence, which in turn, motivates me to set more goals and achieve higher levels.
What do you hope to accomplish with Kumon?
I want to finish the entire math and reading program before high school.
What did it mean to you to be invited to the 2018 Kumon Student Conference?
I was very proud of the accomplishment, but was also excited because I knew I was going to meet and interact with other kids my age that have the same goals and experience. Sometimes, learning informally from your peers can be a more effective way of learning.
What advice do you have for other Kumon Students?
Never give-up and always believe in yourself!

Skyla – Kumon Reading J by 6 Achievement & Kumon Math and Reading G by 4
Skyla is our first J by 6 achiever since the new J by 6 goal was announced in September, 2016. In fact, she reached Kumon Reading Level J as a 5th grader. She will soon reach J by 6 in the Math Program. This means Skyla is studying 2-3 years above her grade level in the Kumon Program. The Kumon Reading J by 6 award is presented to enrolled Kumon students who start studying critical reading, passage structure and character analysis by the end of their 6th grade year. The Kumon Math J by 6 award is presented to enrolled Kumon students who start studying high school Algebra II. Skyla has also previously achieved G by 4 in both Math and Reading.
Skyla started Kumon as a Kindergartner. It is wonderful to see her growth over the year. She is a confident learner and an avid reader, who’s able to overcome challenges with perseverance. Skyla also has great organization and time management skills as she’s an aspiring ballet dancer, who commits to 15 hours a week on dancing on top of her school and Kumon work. I am so proud of Skyla’s achievement thus far. She is on track to complete both the Kumon Math and Reading Programs before High School.
Angelina – Kumon Reading Program Completer
Angelina is our latest Kumon Reading Program Completer at Kumon Huntington Beach - South Center. She completed the program as a 9th grader. The key to finish the program is to plan Kumon around her schedule. It is not an easy task, but it really helps in the long run. I wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors!
Caitlyn – Kumon Reading Level J Completion Award
Caitlyn is a dual-subject student and received Reading J200 completion award as a 7th grader. She makes Kumon her priority despite having a busy schedule attending Orange County School of Arts (studying in the Instrumental Music – Piano conservatory). “Kumon is a lot of hard work, but it makes my school work so much easier. I am in advanced math class and most of my classmates are High School students. I still get A in my math, A’s in Language Arts and other subjects,” said Caitlyn in middle school.
Jesse – Kumon Math C by 1
Jesse is a dual-subject student and started his Kumon studies in Kindergarten. He is now in 2nd grade studying Kumon Math Level D work, more specifically work involving long division with quotients of 2 or more digits. Jesse is excited to start fraction work soon. Jesse’s mother is a high school math teacher who sees that many of the strongest math students in her class are Kumon students. She acknowledges the value of the program despite the fact that her son is already an advanced learner. Repetition and practice makes work perfect. Kumon has proven to be a great supplemental program to school work whether you are looking for enrichment or remedial help. The family has recently enrolled Jesse’s 5 year old sister in our Center.
Aston, Lance, Nathan and Oliver – Kumon Math G by 4
It is exciting to have four students achieving Math Level G by 4 in the same month at the Kumon Center of Huntington Beach - South. What is their success factors? Their commitment to the Kumon Program. They have near perfect attendances to Kumon classes and complete homework as assigned by the instructor. They also have supportive parents who check their work at home, so that they may see their mistakes right away when still fresh in their minds. They are independent learners who are self-motivated. Through self-learning, these students develop confidence in their ability to figure things out on their own, even when things become challenging. This confidence is crucial for developing the disciplined study habits and motivation necessary for high school level work and beyond.
