Dwight Dela Torre

Dwight Dela Torre

The Woo Wai-Kwong Memorial Scholarship Award is presented to students who demonstrate discipline, independence, and an intrinsic drive to achieve.

Dwight Dela Torre is the award recipient for 2016/2017. He has been studying Math at Kumon of Willowbrook-Langley since 2013!  In these three years, he has gone from Level 3A, simple adding, to Level J, which covers topics seen in senior high school, and university level math.  This year he earned the special Kumon designation for students in grade 6 who reach level J: “J by 6”.

What makes Dwight such an exceptional student is his indefatigable thirst for knowledge, and dedication to understanding the material.  He studies the examples carefully and doesn’t assume that anything is too hard for him before he attempts a problem on his own. Dwight accepts challenging new concepts with a calm demeanor; a positive attitude and a smile.

Dwight’s parents support him by diligently correcting every assignment that he completes. They used to add sticky notes to the assignments where he wasn’t able to correct his mistakes, but now he marks the questions himself, including specific questions to clarify the step where he had trouble.  This behaviour distinguishes Dwight as an independent self-learner.

Karen Yang

Karen Yang

This year’s recipient of the 2017/2018 Woo Wai-Kwong Memorial Scholarship Award is Karen Yang. Karen is one of our longest tenured students at Kumon-Willowbrook, enrolling at the centre in October of 2012, and recently becoming our youngest Reading Program Completer in July 2018 at the age of 11. Last year, Karen was recognized for her achievement of reaching level J by Grade 4 in the Reading Program. In addition, she has achieved Kumon platinum honour roll status this year in both math and reading.  Karen demonstrates a high level of academic ability as well as excellent work habits, both of which have allowed her to progress far beyond her grade level. She displays maturity well above her age and gives written responses which are both thoughtful and original. Karen always maintains a respectful and polite attitude in the classroom. Karen possesses an ambition to continuously learn new concepts and is a highly independent learner whose rare questions are always both pertinent and insightful. Karen is very thorough, and we admire her meticulous attention to detail. Her dedication to working through mistakes allowed Karen to identify errors in the Kumon Reading Answer books. Her suggestions have often been accepted as edits by the Kumon Reading Development team and incorporated for future print revisions.

Although Karen has successfully finished the Reading Program, she will continue to make strides in the Math Program where she currently studies high school material despite only just completing Grade 5. We have no doubt that Karen will achieve great things as she progresses through life and continues onto higher levels of education – she is a very worthy recipient of this scholarship, and we are extremely proud of her.
