About the Instructor

Introduction

Lei Melket started her Kumon journey in 2004 at the Honolulu Branch Office helping with administrative duties. As the years went by, Lei played many different roles before finally becoming a certified Kumon Instructor in April 2016. "My goal is to nurture self-learners who not only study above grade level but, succeed in all they do," says Lei. "I am passionate about the Kumon Method and take joy in anything related to the Kumon worksheets. I love doing the worksheets myself, grading them, observing how students do the worksheets, and creating individualized lesson plans for each student based on all of the above."

Biography and Background

Miss Lei

I was born and raised in Central Oahu and grew up in the towns of Mililani & Wahiawa. I attended Mililani Waena Elementary School until transferring to Maryknoll Schools in the 7th grade. I know how challenging the transition can be for students moving from a public to a private school. At the same time, I also experienced the benefits of a college-prep education that made university studies easier.

Ever since I was in high school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. My initial plan when enrolling at UH Manoa was to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Hawaiian Language and maybe teach at a private high school. However, when I graduated from UH, I was in the midst of an unexpectedly successful career as a professional musician and never made it to the classroom to become a teacher. I then started a part-time job at the Kumon Branch Office in Honolulu and there, realized I wanted to open up a Kumon Center of my own one day.
