Josie’s Story
Josie is 10-years-old, studying three years above her grade level in the Kumon Program. In fact, she’s studying the same math material that her mom, who is an eighth grade teacher, teaches her students. Imagine that, a 10-year-old transforming equations, working with linear functions and simplifying monomials and polynomials. She’s well on her way to advanced algebraic expressions and she isn’t even in middle school yet.
One of the things that Josie likes most about Kumon is the fact that she’s studying above her grade level.
“Kumon gives me confidence because I know how strong of a student it has made me,” says Josie. “I know that I can do and learn anything if I do the work and practice daily. Kumon has taught me about the importance of focusing and to not be afraid of challenges, but to enjoy them and work through them because I know I can overcome anything.”
Josie embodies everything that Toru Kumon had in mind when he founded the Kumon Method. He felt that students would experience the true benefits of the Kumon Method if they acquired the study habits necessary for self-learning and advanced study.

Haresh and Madhu story
Hi my name is Haresh, I recently completed the Kumon Reading Program and I started Kumon when I was 3 years old. With English not being my first language, I tended to be uncomfortable with others outside my normal social circle. When I was 3 years old, my mom enrolled me in Kumon’s Reading program to improve my vocabulary skills and to prepare me to be more communicative within a school environment. At age 5, I had the confidence to speak with my school teacher and fellow classmates and took great pride in reading aloud in class. At age 8, I could read chapter books and answer the questions correctly and that created the love for reading. I started reading many chapter books whenever I could. This gave me the confidence to go to the Spelling Bee competition in NSF and get selected for the finals in 2019. In 2021 I got 2nd place at Regional Level in both the Essay Competition and Math Bee in NSF.
At school my favorite things to do where Language - Arts and playing with his friends. I also took the chance to go to the school library every time I finished a book or just so I could just to read in there.
“We are very proud of you for completing Kumon during The Covid-19 Pandemic,” says, my mom. I took it as a challenge to try and finish Kumon before I was in 6th grade. After Kumon and my new-found reading knowledge, I started writing a book with my friend. Having completed many short stories for school and for fun. I was once a shy young boy and now I am writing a book and helping my sister try and complete Kumon.
Kumon helped me do things I never thought I would be able to do. I was sometimes bored in class because I already knew what they were teaching us because Kumon already taught it to me but without Kumon, I would have probably never made friends or even read my favorite books. These 8 years of Kumon were amazing because the staff were nice and the work was challenging but not too challenging. I am now learning Python, hoping to become a programmer, ethical hacker or Ice-cream taste tester when I grow up. With a strong foundation of self-learning skills supporting me throughout my teenage and adult years in one hand and a dream in my other hand, I hold the right combination to be whatever I choose in the near future.
My sister Madhu Varshini has developed a positive attitude and mindset after seeing my success in KUMON. At only 9 years old she completed HII (more than 3 years above school grade) in Kumon reading. Being a Kumon Student she learnt many lessons, but the most beneficial thing that Madhu Varshini has learned in Kumon is how to be an independent problem solver. Madhu says, “Outside of the classroom, Kumon has taught me how to have an efficient, organized work ethic. The experience I had with balancing Kumon and school when I was younger has helped me to take on more extracurricular activities.”
