About the Instructor

Introduction

Welcome!

My name is Anita Tom and like many of you, I am a proud mother, wife, and long-time resident of the beautiful city of San Francisco.

For the past twenty years, I have been serving the San Francisco community as a certified Kumon Instructor. But before working in Kumon, I was just like many of you, searching for a program to compliment my child’s learning. My first experience with Kumon was when I enrolled my oldest son, four years of old at the time, into a local Kumon center.  In the short two years that he was enrolled in the program I observed monumental changes in my child’s demeanor, focus and overall development.  I noticed the enormous impact that the simple action of completing Kumon worksheets had. This interest transformed into curiosity, and eventually evolved into passion.  I began reading articles, books, and journals about early education and tried to gain knowledge of how to properly heighten a student’s motivation and attitude towards academics. I realized the importance of giving a child a strong start at an early age was critical to their success later in life.

After two years into the program, I decided that I not only wanted to make an impact on my two sons’ lives, but also for other children. I pulled both of them out in early 2000 and opened my first center in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown. The success that was found in Chinatown was so personally fulfilling that in 2009, I opened a second center here on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco’s Ingleside district.

The Kumon Program promises much more than just the opportunity to study above grade level. It offers a chance for young learners to realize their passions and pursue them. The meticulous design of the worksheets prompts students to develop a love for learning, as proficiency over one subject leads to an insatiable hunger to learn new, more challenging disciplines. With every concept mastered, a student’s confidence solidifies and grows, equipping a child with the freedom and independence to think by and for themselves. This is Kumon’s mission, to hone a student’s work and study skills, help them discover their passion, and sculpt them into self-learners. The Kumon Method is not the mundane practice of completing worksheets, but a mindset that refines a never-ending desire and curiosity to learn.

As a student, mother, and instructor with over twenty years of experience with the Kumon Program, I am excited to discover the potential within each of my students and maximize their passion for learning. So please, join me in making the greatest investment there is: your child’s future!

Sincerely,

Anita Tom
