About the Instructor

Introduction

There is only one question that drives all my decisions for our Kumon students: what if this was my kid?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a Math Concentration. I also hold a Master's degree in Operations and Technology Management, from The Stuart School of Business, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.

My children attended Indian Prairie School District 204, 1999-2012, in Naperville, IL, where I became involved with the School Board from the time my kids were young grade schoolers until they graduated high school.  This experience allowed me to gain excellent insight into all aspects of K-12 schooling. With that background, it is my objective to connect each family to the right Kumon educational resources.

Your children’s Kumon Program at the Shorewood Center will be tailored to their current learning objectives and family circumstances, in the most efficient – yet realistic – time frame.

Biography and Background

Lovina Saxena

As an educator and former Kumon parent, I have developed a unique perspective over the years, that allows me to visualize the potential in every child when the parent, often caught in the day to day details, might feel overwhelmed with the immediate challenges.

In 1999, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was in full force. Some of us, the K-12 parents, in the newly developing Naperville 204 K-12 School District, formed the Indian Prairie Parents Council (IPPC).

For ten years, I served as the IPPC rep for my children's elementary, middle and high schools. The scope of my volunteer commitment expanded to include legislative issues, special education, gifted programs, learning disabilities, early intervention.

During these years, my children were also Kumon students. I realized how effective the Kumon Program could be for students of all abilities. The Kumon Method meets every child at his/her level of preparedness and individualizes the study plan every step of the child's way.

Kumon Kids are not born geniuses. Instead, over the years, they have been trained to achieve accuracy with speed. They assume responsibility for their progress. They are not afraid to make a mistake; they know how to apply the learning, independently, to the next topic. They are confident that with persistence, they can achieve their goals, on their own. And they do!

Training and Certification

In addition to successfully meeting all corporate licensing requirements, I obtained a K-12 substitute teacher's certificate to work in K-12 school districts, with mainstream, gifted and special education students.

I wanted to put my Kumon training into actual context of my future students. What worked? What did not work? Why? What support did the local school educators need now? How could we provide that?

This Center opened in July 2004 with 3 enrolled students: my son, daughter and her best friend.

It was the No Child Left Behind Act back in 1999.  It has been Common Core Standards since 2013.  It can be another set of guidelines in the future. What does not change, are the foundational skills in mathematics, comprehension and writing.

And so the story continues .....

Today, our Kumon Kids are found in about 20 area K-12 schools. Many are in college, graduate school, with the US Military, all excelling in their chosen endeavors. Allow me to give your children the tools to write their own success stories!
