KUMON THROUGH A STUDENT’S EYES

6th grade
Current math level : N (11th grade math)
I was 4 years old when I first started Kumon. At the time, I doubted that what I learned in Kumon would be useful in the future. Now, though, I realize how much the power of independent learning advantages me in my classes and my life. Kumon taught me how to assess what I can accomplish and set my own goals to map out my future. It has taught me how to achieve the greatest results with the least amount of effort, and how to use this efficiency to advance far beyond my grade level.
In 2019, I completed Kumon’s Reading Program, which developed my reading comprehension, phonetic awareness, fluency, and vocabulary. The reading levels I encountered further into the program (such as J, K, L) taught me how to actively engage with what I read. I discovered a new way of reading that included self-reflecting and evaluating at a rapid pace. This gave me an advantage over my classmates, but I was sure to use these abilities to help my peers understand difficult topics and, in the process, further sharpen my understanding of those concepts. Explaining a particular idea to someone tests your knowledge of the concept, and Kumon has helped me phrase complex ideas in a way that more people can understand.
I have recently completed Level M in the Math program, which includes concepts like trigonometric functions, addition formulas, and much more. Each of the topics relate to each other in some way, which helps me connect many different ideas. For example, the Pythagorean Theorem was an essential topic throughout the levels that follow it. The simple algebraic skills I learned in levels G-I and the functions I learned in levels J-L (like logarithms, limits, and differentiation) all have a role in later concepts.
Kumon taught me how to be organized, responsible, and patient with my work. Persevering through page after page brought me to where I am today, although I sometimes felt like what I was learning was useless, I seriously wouldn’t be where I am right now without those challenges -- and especially not without the support of my Mom, the Kumon instructors and assistants. Thanks to everything that I've experienced so far, I'm sure that I will go far!
When I started Kumon...
My name is Steven. I started Kumon at the age of 3 and a half. I started in level 7A in Math and Reading. I like both. I am in a higher level than my classmates in school and I do work faster than my classmates in school. Many times I do schoolwork fast but not neat. Kumon helps me do schoolwork quick and easy. The reading in Kumon helps me read higher grade books like chapter books. The math in Kumon helps me do workbooks for third graders. I thought that Kumon is a wonderful place for kids to learn. When I was 5, I was doing C1 in math and reading, between 2nd and 3rd grade level. It is awesome to be smart!
I think Kumon helps kids learn both math and reading. Right now I know division and how to do crosswords at level D in math, a 4th grade level ,and C2, a 3rd grade level in reading. Kumon helps me decide that I want to be a good teacher for kindergarten. I think that Kumon is a great place for learning! Everyone should try it!!!
