Kumon Life

I am Kyra, a six grader who has been attending the Kumon Center in Stockton since I was in kindergarten.

My math level now is J, and level I for reading. My mother and I first learned about Kumon from my Aunt Judy. All of her 3 kids attended Kumon. Kumon has helped me in school, and has improved my study habit. In Kumon, I learn from the examples provided and work independently. My Instructors, Mr. and Mrs. Tran, and their staff are very patient and knowledgeable. They are always willing to help me no matter how many times I ask for help. They let me try to fix my mistakes on my own, but if I do not understand, they explain it to me step by step and show me what I did wrong. They make sure I understand the concept before letting me move on to the next one.

Most of the concepts of my math subject in school are like a review from what I learned in Kumon. This is mostly the reason why I have an “A” grade in school for math. I even help some of my classmates sometimes to understand equations.  My Kumon reading helps me with my reading comprehension.

I do not feel likeI am being forced to attend Kumon; instead I enjoy doing it because I love getting “A” grades in school. Attending Kumon is not always easy.

My parents, with the help of my aunts, drop me off to the Kumon Center according to my schedule. While waiting for me to be done with my Kumon, my mother most of the time, goes to the shopping malls, groceries and restaurants close by, to enjoy her free time. Sometimes she falls asleep sitting down while waiting for me in the waiting area provided, especially if she just came from work. My parents pay a certain amount for it, but they said it is money well spent. We can’t just buy “A” grades. There are times that my parents ask me if I still want to continue Kumon, especially if there are a lot of school works, and my answer is always yes. I can’t imagine having no Kumon help for my math and reading lessons in school.

Kyra's Kumon Experience

Kyra Magsayo

I am Kyra, a current senior in high school, who was enrolled in the Kumon Center in Stockton since kindergarten. From kindergarten to twelfth grade, I continued to diligently work through the program until I eventually completed both the math and reading programs.

As a Kumon program completer, I have seen how the skills I learned in Kumon have positively impacted my studies and overall work ethic. The Kumon program is unique in that each student is allowed to work at his or her own pace, with success being heavily dependent on the individual student’s motivation to learn. This taught me the importance of self-motivation and independence.

Every day, I pushed myself to complete the math and reading worksheets. I learned to be patient with myself when I had to finish correcting my mistakes, or when I couldn't understand a concept. I learned to critically analyze the examples and then apply the new knowledge to other problems. I gained confidence in my abilities and developed the mindset that I should not easily give up when faced with difficulties.

Another benefit of Kumon is that I was learning material above my grade level. Because of this, math and reading concepts gone over in school were like a review of what I had already learned in Kumon. I was able to succeed in my classes, and to even help my peers understand the concepts.

Kumon helped me develop a strong work ethic, enabling me to become more dedicated, responsible, and self-disciplined. I am thankful to the Kumon program for helping me better develop these life skills that will continue to help me in my future endeavors and academic pursuits.
