About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Toronto - Cabbagetown.

We are located at
543 Parliament Street,
Toronto, ON  M4X 1P7

It is at the intersection of Parliament Street and Winchester Street in the Cabbagetown area of Toronto.

For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Policies

Attendance

Students are scheduled to attend class once or twice each week for 30-minute sessions for each subject. You can choose the time slot most comfortable for you. If a student is more than 15 minutes late for their timeslot, there is a chance that they may have to pick up their work and complete it at home. If you know you will be early or late, please call so that we may determine whether we can accommodate you.

Vacation and Absences

Please give one week’s advanced notice of any planned absences so that we can prepare assignments for your child’s absence. Students will pick up work at the Centre the day before their absence. Tuition is not prorated for absences.

If your child is unable to attend a class (not feeling well, etc.) and would like to pick up the work, please email/call us and worksheets will be left in the mailbox for pick up. If not, work will be deferred until the next scheduled class.

A student is considered “discontinued” in the program after one month of absence and has to be registered as a new student.

Incomplete Homework

Completing homework is necessary to succeed in Kumon. If, for any reason, homework is not completed, please bring any unfinished assignments to class, so that homework can be reassigned.

Communication

We will send important communication periodically. Also, following every Achievement Test, we will communicate the results to parents. Most of this information is sent to you through your child, so please check their blue pouch.

If you ever have any concerns about your child’s progress, the Kumon Method, or anything else that we may be able to help you with, please do not hesitate to call or email us and we will set up a mutually convenient time. Success in Kumon requires proactive communication on the part of the student, the parents and the instructor.

Class rules

Students are asked to be considerate of their fellow classmates by talking quietly and minimally. Ensure all telecommunication devices are set to silent/vibrate mode while in the Centre. Parents and siblings are not allowed in the classroom and are requested to be quiet in the waiting area.

Due to allergies and sensitivities, no food or drinks (except water) are allowed in the Centre. Please bring in the water bottle.

Parents in the Classroom

Parents are not permitted in the classroom. If you would like to speak to us, please call ahead or email. If you want to talk to us in person, we are happy to schedule an appointment during the non-class hours.

Our class time is dedicated to our students.

Waiting Area

The waiting area is not monitored. It is your responsibility to pick your child up promptly at the end of the class. If your child is not independent, please be responsible and come on time.

Please remember that each session per subject is approximately 20-30 minutes. If the student is enrolled in two subjects, it is approximately 50-60 minutes.

After their scheduled class is over, they will be sent outside to the waiting area, which is not monitored. If the student was late for the class, they will still be sent out at their scheduled time.

We have a phone for students to use, they can call you when they have completed the class.
