About the Instructor

As an extensively trained and certified professional instructor, I serve as a mentor who guides your children through their work while also providing direction, support and encouragement. I create an at-home study plan in addition to monitoring classroom assignments, and I emphasize the importance of accurately completing each assignment within a designated time frame. This has helped many of my students increase self-confidence, thus becoming more self-reliant. Like all Kumon Instructors, I have a true passion for education and an earnest desire to help children succeed.

Instructor : Hector Guy

Hi! I’m Hector Guy, the instructor for the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Union City – Alvarado. I’ve been a Kumon instructor since 2008, and over the many years, it has been a joy to work with students of all ages and abilities. 

I first learned of the Kumon program through my three kids. I enrolled my son, Harvey, in the Kumon program in 1988 as a kindergartner and quickly saw the benefits. His transformation was amazing! I saw the positive changes in his academics and an increase in his confidence. Later on, I enrolled my other two children in the program as well. 

Before opening my center, I worked as an IT manager for over 20 years. Working in IT, I enjoyed developing and working with my staff to improve their skills and abilities. During this time, I also started helping at my wife’s Kumon center in Milpitas and Evergreen. While working at the Milpitas and Evergreen locations for over a year, I noticed many similarities in the method of developing staff and students. 

After attending a Kumon conference and listening to other instructor’s stories and experiences of developing students, I decided that I wanted to become a Kumon instructor as well! Over the years, I witnessed how the Kumon program can be tailored to every student depending on their abilities, needs and goals. As an instructor, I make it a point to individualize my lesson planning and instruction to suit the needs of every family.
