About the Instructor

Introduction

As an extensively trained and certified professional instructor, I serve as a mentor who guides your children through their work while also providing direction, support and encouragement. I create an at-home study plan in addition to monitoring classroom assignments, and I emphasize the importance of accurately completing each assignment within a designated time frame. This has helped many of my students increase self-confidence, thus becoming more self-reliant. Like all Kumon Instructors, I have a true passion for education and an earnest desire to help children succeed.

Biography and Background

Kumon of Walnut Creek Owner and Center Director: Ted Kim
Ted Kim

Hello! My name is Ted Kim, and I am the center director and owner of Kumon of Walnut Creek. I’m so glad you’re interested in Kumon! Let me share a little about myself and my journey to becoming a Kumon Instructor.

For over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping students grow and thrive through the Kumon program. My role is to guide, support, and inspire children to build strong foundational skills that not only help them excel academically but also prepare them for life’s challenges. I aim to foster confidence, independence, and a love of learning in every student, helping them unlock their full potential.

Before joining Kumon, I worked as a software engineer. I earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science. My professional experience included working at Pacific Bell where I developed a wide range of desktop applications as an independent contractor. While I enjoyed the technical world, I realized that my true calling lay in education—where I could make a meaningful impact on young minds. The moment I was introduced to the Kumon program, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. Without hesitation, I contacted Kumon headquarters the very next day to begin my journey. To further enhance my expertise as a Kumon Instructor, I pursued and completed a master’s degree in education, solidifying my commitment to helping students succeed.

Kumon reminds me of my experience with Judo, which I started in high school. Through hard work and persistence, I eventually earned my blackbelt—a symbol of mastery and dedication. Similarly, Kumon helps students progress step by step, building skills and confidence until they reach their own “black belt” of academic mastery. As an instructor, I see myself as a guide, helping students navigate their own unique paths toward success, and giving them tools they’ll carry for a lifetime.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about me and the Kumon program. I look forward to meeting you and helping your child achieve their academic goals.
