Biography and Background

Shilpa Kumar
Mrs. Kumar

Shilpa Kumar grew up in Calcutta, India. While in India, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy. She has lived in Texas for almost twenty years. After moving to Houston, she enrolled in The University of Texas School of Health Science Center where she received a Masters Degree in Public Health. Shilpa moved to Lewisville almost eighteen years ago and after having children, she began her career as a high school science teacher; she is a Texas Certified Physical Science Teacher (Physics and Chemistry) and the Texas Board of Education has recognized her as a “Highly Qualified Teacher.” As a teacher for ten years, she taught physics, chemistry, biology, algebra II, health, speech, and science, grades 6-12.

“To choose to have a child is to choose forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” This quote highlights Shilpa’s relationship with her two daughters, Lori and Natasha. According to Shilpa, her girls are the motivation for all that she does. Both are motivated, high achieving students who are in the gifted and talented programs. Lori attends Texas Tech working on her DNP and Natasha is in her 3rd year of Business school. The girls join their mother at the Kumon Center on a regular basis sharing their enthusiasm for learning and helping others. The girls’ presence infuses the center with a strong sense of family and the importance of learning and working together.

Throughout Shilpa’s life, whether babysitting, volunteering in after-school programs, or working as a teacher, she has sought to make a positive impact in the lives of children. Shilpa comes by this desire quite honestly as all members of her immediate family are educators: her eldest brother is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who travels nationally and internationally educating other healthcare practitioners about mental health issues, her younger brother is also a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and is the Chairman of Psychiatry at the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Midland, Texas, her father is currently the Dean of an engineering school in India and has held teaching positions throughout his career, and her mother taught the children many life lessons and also taught them English when they were young. As an adult, Shilpa continued to be surrounded by educators: her husband is a computer engineer who travels extensively training others, and her three sister-in-laws and mother-in-law are all educators.

Shilpa continued this family tradition of educators by joining the Kumon organization where she is able to help others reach their full potential while enjoying her love of teaching. As the owner of the Kumon Math and Reading Center of West Plano, Shilpa is excited and looks forward to helping your children grow and learn through the proven success of the Kumon method.

Shilpa enjoys crafts and any form of art. She is an avid animal lover and has adopted several rescue dogs. She enjoys spending time with her family.
