My Journey Throughout Kumon

"I vividly remember the day that I decided that I would go to Kumon. Being a younger sibling, I would always try to copy my older brother. One day, I saw my brother walking through the door with a big smile on his face. The Hot Wheels car was peeking out of his Kumon bag, and I realized what was happening. The proud look on my father’s face and the sparkle in my mom’s eye when he said that he passed his test was enough to make me shout, 'I want to go there too!'
My work in the program affected my studies in many ways. Juggling Kumon, school, and my extracurriculars was very hard on me. It took a lot to maintain straight A’s in school, attendance in my after-school activities, and completing Kumon papers all at the same time. In the beginning it was easy, but as I went on to the more challenging levels, I needed to spend more time doing my work. Yet most of the time, I was not willing to give it up. From there, I started to get serious with my involvement, and used that to push myself as far as I could. Using the new skills that I honed, I worked hard to get invited into the Honors programs for all my classes at school, specifically, Advanced Language Arts. Many of the passages that I enjoyed analyzing reading at Kumon made their way into that class.
From the moment that I walked inside Kumon Learning Center to now, I have grown both as a student and a person. When I completed the Reading Program, I felt that I fulfilled the reason that I joined. What I have learned has took me to many places in my life."

Progressing Through the Kumon Reading Program
"With practice, I was able to understand the meaning behind many complicated pieces of writing, such as Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, and T.S. Eliot. Rising through the levels of the Reading Program, I was able to improve my reading and writing skills...Not only did I gain knowledge about various reading and writing topics, but I also gained time management and goal setting skills."

The Challenges of Kumon Math

"I started Kumon very young as a 4-year-old. I was primarily put in Kumon by my parents to get ahead of my classmates in school, but as I look back, I realize that Kumon gave me so much more than that, especially Kumon Math.
As I aced the first few levels, the new levels started to get harder and harder. The first time I had problems with being efficient with my time was third grade. The first few weeks were tough, but soon I figured out a schedule for myself that satisfied me. By learning how to manage my time efficiently, I was able to maintain this high volume of Kumon that I was doing along with all my other activities. In addition to being productive with my time, Kumon’s math concepts got progressively harder.
At the beginning of every level, I always struggled with the concepts because they were foreign to me. This brings me to the second thing Kumon taught me: staying calm when faced with uncertainty. Throughout levels, I struggled a lot, but by staying calm, I was able to call upon previous things I had learned to solve new problems that I faced. With these two strategies in my back pocket, I was able to quickly advance through Kumon’s Math levels."

Growing a Love for Math
"Kumon helped me to love math. I became faster and better at it. I got to the point where I was much faster at doing math than anyone at school, and even my teachers were amazed. Kumon helped me to focus on making goals and making sure that I reached them in time. I even received a scholarship to college because of the values I learned at Kumon. Currently, I have the privilege of working at Kumon and helping other students achieve their goals. I definitely wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for Kumon."
