About theInstructor

Introduction

How it Works

As an extensively trained and certified professional instructor, I serve as a mentor who guides your children through their work while also providing direction, support and encouragement. I create an at-home study plan in addition to monitoring classroom assignments, and I emphasize the importance of accurately completing each assignment within a designated time frame. This has helped many of my students increase self-confidence, thus becoming more self-reliant. Like all Kumon Instructors, I have a true passion for education and an earnest desire to help children succeed.

One of the great advantages of Kumon is that we are an individualized program of study, meaning that I can tailor the curriculum to suit your child's needs. If more time is needed for understanding of certain concepts or better development of study skills, we practice a little more. When it's time to advance, there's no constraint; your child moves on. This program is a terrific supplement to traditional school, where there is a time-based agenda for each concept presented, which doesn't necessarily fit all students.

Biography and Background

About This Instructor
22

As the child of two writers, I was constantly encouraged to learn--to ask, "Why?" and to see the answers. This curiosity and passion for learning has led me to teach as a substitute for many years while my three children were still at home, and to volunteer for an adult Literacy program, Literacy Action, based in downtown Atlanta.

My desire is to guide your child into the thrilling world of learning to learn--and to help him or her tap into his unlimited potential. A person's attitude toward learning and motivation are the keys to success in academics, and the development of discipline and perseverance are the character traits that are critical to success in all of life. Kumon is a venue that provides both motivation and the opportunity to develop those skills.

I graduated magna cum laude from Florida State University with a B.S. degree in Communication/Marketing.

Training and Certification

In addition to passing tests on all of the required Kumon worksheets through high school levels in Reading (critical reading/character analysis) and Math (Algebra II), I have taken additional courses in lesson planning, and curriculum. I am a member of a Kumon volunteer reading study group, where I continually examine and collaborate with colleagues on application of principles in order to better guide my students. Continuous study of math worksheets up to Calculus keeps me knowledgeable for my students, as well.
