About the Center

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Center of Chicago - Northwest. For more than 50 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Glossary of Kumon Terms

Achievement Test - A test given at the end of each level to assess mastery of the completed material and to determine whether a student should advance to the next level or continue to practice at the current level.

ASHR - Advanced Student Honor Roll recognizes all Kumon students working one or more grade levels ahead of their school grade level.

Feedback - The interactive process by which the Kumon Instructor, parent and student communicate regularly about the child's performance, correct work, set goals and make continual adjustments to ensure optimal advancement.

J by 6 - A term referring to the goal of attaining Kumon Level J by 6th Grade (math and reading milestone). Kumon recognizes this accomplishment with a national award.

Independent learning - The key element of the Kumon Method that distinguishes Kumon from tutoring and other programs. By working through material on their own, as guided by a Kumon Instructor, students gain mastery, motivation and the confidence to succeed -without the constant intervention of a tutor or teacher.

Mastery - The ability to apply a skill or concept with the accuracy, speed and confidence to demonstrate a total command of the material. Mastery means that a skill or concept has become second nature and will be permanently retained. Mastery is the prerequisite for advancement and the goal of Kumon study.

Placement Test - A test given to students prior to enrollment to determine correct starting point in the Kumon curriculum. To ensure a solid foundation for advancement, as supported by years of research with thousands of Kumon students, this starting point is often well below the child's current grade level.

SCT - Standard Completion Time. A prescribed number of minutes to complete a particular worksheet with a perfect(or near perfect) score. Kumon determines-and continually reevaluates-SCT based on the actual performance of tens of thousands of students. Successfully completing worksheets within the SCT demonstrates that the student has mastered the material and is ready to move on.
