About the Centre

Introduction

Welcome to our Kumon Math and Reading Centre. For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up, or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated, and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Kitchener-Pioneer Village is committed to unlocking every child’s potential and building the confidence required for enhancing academic abilities. We strive to set the students on the road to success by following the Kumon method. We will guide the children to acquire the skills necessary for their post-secondary studies while creating a joyful learning experience.

Policies

Classroom Hours and Scheduled Times

• Class times will run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-7:30 PM. Students can arrive up to 7:00 pm. If a student arrives after this time, they will be asked to pick up their work and take it home with them.
•Each student will be scheduled to attend classes at a time agreed upon at registration based on available times. It is important that students attend class during this assigned time in order to ensure all students receive the appropriate instruction time and have a seat in the classroom during the assigned time. If you do not arrive on time, you may be asked to pick up work for the day.
• These times will be monitored and if a student habitually attends outside of their time, the parent will be contacted to ensure this time slot is most appropriate or to change the time slot if necessary.
• If families need to change their assigned time, please contact Corina and a mutually agreeable new time slot will be assigned.

Communication

• Your child’s progress is always our highest priority. You will receive the results of achievements tests at the completion of each level. However, if you would like a progress report or meeting to discuss how your child is progressing, please let Corina know. Parent meetings are done by appointment outside of regular class hours.
• Please do not hesitate to call or e-mail Corina if you need any guidance related to Kumon or if you would like to share information on what you are observing at home.
• Please keep us informed of any changes to your e-mail address, cell number or emergency contact information.

Absences
Long term absence

Long breaks are strongly discouraged as the program builds on each day’s progress. Our Centre does not encourage short term or casual enrollment.
A student may be absent, at no charge, without being discontinued as long as the student is not absent for more than one month during a calendar year. When a student is absent from the program for more than one month, the student will be required to re-register and pay the enrollment fee. A placement test will need to be taken prior to assigning work.

Short term absence

When a student is absent for a class day, it is expected that the centre be notified in advance so that work can be provided or adjustments to the students’ work can be completed. Whenever possible, it is encouraged that families pick up their Kumon worksheets during class times if the student will be absent, however with advance notice, arrangements can be made to pick up work outside of class hours.

Vacation

Advanced notice of vacation days is expected so that either work can be provided throughout the vacation period or adjustments can be made if no work is to be provided. This will ensure a smooth transition back to class after vacation.

Centre Closure

The Centre will be closed on all statutory holidays as well as Winter holidays.
Planned centre closures are announced in the centre about two weeks prior. A notice will be posted in the Parent Waiting Area.
In the event of inclement weather, where the school boards have closed schools, the centre might also be closed.

Class Rules

• Upon registration, your child will receive a Kumon pouch as well as a pencil and an eraser. Please ensure that the pouch is looked after and that your child comes to each class with a pencil, eraser and all the work they were assigned(completed or not).Students are expected to attend class ready to work.
• Students are required to behave in a respectful manner at the Kumon Centre. This includes using good manners, a quiet voice and not being unruly. Students who are unable to follow the rules will be asked to leave the class in order to maintain the learning environment.
• Parents of Early Learners are required to wait in the centre for the entire time that their child is attending class.
• Parents of non-Early Learners are also encouraged to stay. However, if you leave the centre, please ensure that you return before your child’s class work is completed. We cannot account for your child’s whereabouts once he/she has left the classroom/student area.
