About the Center

Introduction

Welcome to the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Palm Coast! For more than 60 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. For more information about the Kumon Math Program, click here.

The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. For more information about the Kumon Reading Program, click here.

CLASS POLICIES & GUIDELINES

All students are scheduled for a specific time slot per subject twice a week. Parents/guardians must not bring the student outside of his/her scheduled time slot, unless this has been specifically cleared by the Instructor or the Chief Assistant.

The student must come to the Center twice a week, as per schedule, to derive full benefits of the Kumon program. The necessary guidance and assistance through direct interaction, introduction and review of new concepts are some of the key benefits of Center class time. Each student shall be given personal attention and his/her class work shall be evaluated by the Center staff for the key factors in determining a student’s proficiency and progress, such as time, accuracy, work skills, procedural steps and correctional ability.

Parents/guardians shall be fully responsible for dropping off and picking up a student to/from the Center. After a student is dropped-off, the parent/guardian must be aware of the time for pick-up. Parents/guardians must not leave a student in the Center waiting at the end of the study session. The Center does not have the space for unoccupied students and their presence may cause distraction/disruption to other students. Parents/guardians are advised that each student’s study session may vary in length according to the time it takes the student to complete his/her assigned classwork. The Center cannot be responsible for supervising a student once his/her classwork has been completed.

The Center strives to provide a distraction-free environment for our students and requests that parents/guardians/family members in the Waiting Area treat the Center as a “Silent Zone” and refrain from any activity, such as use of cell phones etc., which may cause distraction to the students. Food or drinks are not permitted inside the Center premises. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated.

CENTER CALENDAR

(Annual Calendar available at the front desk)

The Center is open year round and observes most of the same holidays as the Flagler County Schools. In the event of emergencies or severe weather conditions, the center will follow the Flagler County Schools District mandates. For these special/emergency closures, students will be exempt from their regular homework.

STUDENT VACATIONS AND ABSENCES

Kumon strongly recommends that students take homework on vacation with them so as not to slow their progress and to ensure continuity. If necessary, the Center may reduce the number of worksheets during vacations & holidays.

Parents/guardians must inform the Center of vacation dates at the earliest using the Vacation Planner sheets available at the front desk. To avoid errors, please do not call us with these requests.

Parents/guardians should not bring a student to the Center if he/she is ill. For absences due to illness, please call the Center and arrange to pick up the missed class work or homework. As a parent/guardian, please use your discretion as to whether your child is well enough to complete his/her homework and keep the Center informed.

LIBRARY

All students, regardless of subject, will have the opportunity to check out books from the Center library, which has several level appropriate as well as award-winning books. Students shall be allowed to check out one book at a time for one week. In the event a book is lost or is damaged beyond repair, the parent/guardian will need to pay for the cost to replace the book or choose to replace the book itself.

INCENTIVES AND AWARDS

There are several ways by which a Kumon student is rewarded for his/her progress:

Kumon Dollars: Kumon Dollars shall be awarded to students to reward achievement. These can be used by students to shop at the K-Store (open at the Center once a month).

Awards Ceremony: The Center will have an awards ceremony, once a year, to acknowledge and celebrate students’ hard work in successfully completing various Kumon levels; for achieving Advanced Student Honor Roll and for other achievements. The Center will inform well in advance of this special event to enable the student’s parent/guardian/family to attend.

COMMUNICATION

Parent-Instructor communication is essential for the success of a student in the Kumon program. A parent/guardian is free to discuss a student’s progress and/or address any questions/concerns by seeking an appointment with the Center Instructor on any working day other than during Center Class hours. Upon successful completion of each level, a Progress Report, the results of the Achievement Test and an outline of upcoming goals shall be provided. Formal Parent Conferences shall be scheduled upon the completion of several checkpoint months of enrollment.

DISCONTINUATION POLICY

The last month of enrollment must be indicated by filling out a Notice of Discontinuation available at the front desk. This Notice must be received by our office during normal business hours on or before the last business day of the previous month.

This is applicable for each subject that your child discontinues from. Any other form of communication including but not limited to emails and phone calls regarding discontinuation will not count towards this policy and your tuition payment obligations will continue until our office receives the written Notice.  For example, if you would like August to be your child’s last month at Kumon of Palm Coast, we must receive the signed Notice of Discontinuation on or before the last business day of July.
