About theInstructor

As an extensively trained and certified professional instructor, I serve as a mentor who guides your children through their work while also providing direction, support and encouragement. I create an at-home study plan in addition to monitoring classroom assignments, and I emphasize the importance of accurately completing each assignment within a designated time frame. This has helped many of my students increase self-confidence, thus becoming more self-reliant. Like all Kumon Instructors, I have a true passion for education and an earnest desire to help children succeed.

Biography and Background

Mita Tomerlin is the Director/Instructor of Kumon of Palm Coast.

Mrs. Tomerlin has been a resident of Flagler County since 2005.

She obtained her Master of Science degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science, both from the University of Florida. During her graduate studies at the University of Florida, she was an Instructor and Teaching Assistant for several undergraduate level Mathematics and Computer Science courses. After graduating from the University of Florida, she worked as a Software Engineer for a large telecommunications company, Motorola, for almost 8 years.

After her career at Motorola, she experienced a short-lived but very rewarding and satisfying tenure as a Middle School Mathematics Teacher, where she was primarily hired as a Mathematics Specialist, to bring specific students of Pre-Algebra and Algebra I up to speed with concepts they had not mastered. During this tenure, she succeeded in motivating students to learn Mathematics and achieved tremendous success. About the same time, she was also learning about the successes that several of her friend's children were experiencing from studying in the Kumon Program.

The above factors coupled with Mrs. Tomerlin’s lifelong passion for education, were instrumental in her decision to switch careers to become an education entrepreneur and apply for a Kumon franchise in Palm Coast, Florida. She completed an intensive training program at Kumon North America’s corporate training center to become a certified Kumon Instructor.

Mrs. Tomerlin is a strong believer in the Kumon philosophy and method of education. Kumon is an individualized program which provides a systematic, structured and linear approach to learning. Students start from a “comfortable starting point” and progress at their own pace filling in any gaps in their learning until mastery is achieved. Kumon follows the tried and tested “practice makes perfect” method. Mrs. Tomerlin enrolled her two daughters in Kumon after she opened her Center in Palm Coast in August, 2010 and they are both experiencing success through the Kumon Program.

Mrs. Tomerlin is an active member of the Flagler County community. She enjoys volunteering at the local schools and sponsoring various school events. She actively supports the local school PTOs in their efforts towards raising funds for their school and organizing events for families. She hosts a Book Drive at her Kumon Center each year in the month of October and donates all collected books to local non-profit organizations.

In her free time, Mrs. Tomerlin enjoys baking, gardening, playing tennis, hiking and biking in our county's beautiful nature trails and sitting at the beach and reading a book. She is also an avid traveler and loves to travel around the world.
