Why do you personally enjoy this book?
I enjoy both the story and simple illustrations which are fun to look at and discuss. While it is a story about accepting differences, it’s also a beautiful tale about family and friendship. Children can also learn about how certain colors combine together to make new colors. The narrative is also easy and accessible for children to attempt on their own as well as for parents to read together with their children.
One interesting fact about this book is that it is only one of two titles on the Recommended Reading List that uses all lowercase letters. The other title is archy and mehitabel by Don Marquis in Level I.
Why do you feel children enjoy this book?
The illustrations are simple and abstract and may be a puzzle for some children at first. Eventually they will enjoy following and observing how the illustrations shift and change throughout the story. They will also be able to relate to the main characters, their friendship, and their shared adventures.
What skills and/or values might children gain by reading this book?
Children learn about the value of friendship and how children can become friends even if they come from different backgrounds, as illustrated in this book through the use of colors. It is a simple tale about embracing differences and how blending those differences together in friendship makes adventures and life even more colorful.
