CREATING A PERSONALIZED KINDERGARTEN READINESS LEARNING PLAN

No two children are the same. Each child is truly unique, from the way they express themselves to the way they like to dress themselves. A kindergarten readiness learning plan must also be unique to each child. In fact, a personalized kindergarten readiness plan must speak directly to that child – their age, their needs, their abilities – and it must be adjusted as skills grow over time.

WHY IS KINDERGARTEN READINESS SO IMPORTANT?

Kindergarten readiness helps give a child stable footing when they enter school. They’re less likely to be overwhelmed by new friends, a new environment, the teacher and new routines on the first day of class – simply because they’re already familiar with and ready for it all.

Just how beneficial is kindergarten readiness? It’s been found that children who are kindergarten-ready have an advantage over their peers who are less prepared. The United Way says, “The academic success of children in later years depends heavily upon their kindergarten readiness. The first few years of education and preparedness are the most crucial to establishing a solid foundation from which children can adapt to school systems and learn successfully.”

WHAT GOES INTO KINDERGARTEN READINESS?

Nationwide, school boards agree on a number of basics that a kindergarten readiness checklist should include. These skills are the fundamentals to help a child gain motor skills, personal skills, math, literacy and social-emotional skills. This list includes, but is not limited to:

  • How to count to 10
  • Knowing the alphabet; identifying most letters
  • How to spell their name
  • How to hold a book correctly and turn pages
  • Verbalizing wants and needs
  • Saying “hello and goodbye”
  • Happily separating from their parents for the duration of the school day
  • How to safely use scissors
  • How to hold pens, pencils or crayons correctly
  • Getting dressed independently
  • Going to the bathroom and washing their hands
  • Tying their shoes

PERSONALIZING KINDERGARTEN READINESS

So how can such readiness activities support each individual child and cover the basics? Programs like Kumon, which starts with an early learning curriculum, customize the learning experience. Each child builds fundamental skills step by step, with incremental increases in difficulty. They practice skills on their own through worksheet assignments and with the support of an Instructor at the Kumon Center. If they need more time to practice, that is not a problem. Each child works at their own pace. They advance through the program as they master skills. Need more help in one area? Their assignments are adjusted to take that into account as part of their personalized kindergarten readiness learning plan. At the end of the day, personalized kindergarten readiness is all about each individual child – your child –gaining new skills, so they’re well prepared for kindergarten and beyond.
