It’s that time of year again when kids head back into the classroom. Getting back to the swing of things is challenging, but instilling good study habits in your child can help them start the new school year off strong.

Did you notice certain areas in their learning that your child struggled in? Are there areas they want to continue improving? Here are tips for creating good study habits to ensure your child learns the best way that works for them!

Encourage Short Breaks

Studying and remaining focused can be hard enough for kids. If your child is studying for a while without breaks, they may become overwhelmed. Not having a break can also cause your child to become tired and less motivated to continue the task. They may even shut down mentally and emotionally if they do not get a chance to step away for a few minutes. To help your child stay on track with their studying and homework, encourage them to take short breaks.

Having these “bursts” of learning gives your child a mental break to help them focus on what they are trying to accomplish. Also, this can help them relax if they feel swamped with their workload.

Create a Comfortable Study Space

Creating a study space that is comfortable and positive for your child can help them stay on track with their study habits. Make an area in your house that is quiet, has no potential distractions, and is their own safe space! A designated spot for your child to do their work independently with no interruptions can help to guarantee they remain on track with their education needs. It keeps their work organized and most importantly, their minds.

Keep a goal checklist and check it off as they go!

Keeping a list of goals is a great way to stay on track with learning. It enables your child to see their progress and identify what needs to get done. Give them the time to write down some of the goals they want to accomplish. After they have created the checklist, look it over and ensure that they are realistic goals for them. Also, consider if the bigger goals can be broken down into smaller actions to help them get there.

You can display the checklist somewhere they can see often to help them stay on track. When they see their goals getting checked off, this can help boost their confidence. They will see their progress which can motivate them to finish the list to achieve their goals!

Teach them organization

The best way to improve your child’s study habits is to encourage them to stay organized. Encourage them to pick out a planner so they can write down when assignments are due. Knowing when to complete their work can help them manage their time better and feel less stressed. You can also create a study schedule with set times dedicated to homework and academic practice. Repetition can keep your child on track and in the habit of completing their work, so try to aim for the same timeframe each day.

Use these tips with your child to create good study habits throughout the school year. Although it may take time to develop these habits, remember that repetition is key to success!
