How Do Assessments Support Student Success?

As a Kumon Instructor, Samuel Song views the initial student assessment as a chance to build a relationship with new parents and students when they come to his center in Spokane, Washington.

“It helps me to share with the family how we can help them, with specifics,” Song says about assessing student learning. “It allows me to share with the parent my honest, professional opinion on their child’s current ability, how we can help the student and what goals we can help them achieve.”

Each student interested in enrolling in the Kumon Program takes an assessment in the classroom before a customized education plan is put in place. The assessment provides several benefits for students, their parents and the Instructor.

The assessments play a vital role in a student’s initial introduction to Kumon and offer several benefits and instructional strategies, including:

Accurate Placement:

The assessment allows your Kumon Instructor to accurately place your child in the appropriate level of study, ensuring that they are properly challenged by the material.

Individualized Learning Plan:

The assessment also helps identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing the Instructor to personalize a lesson plan based on the student’s individual needs. Those strengths and weaknesses aren’t always apparent to the parents of the student, which can make the assessment so valuable.

Goal Setting:

Kumon’s assessment provides a baseline of valuable information that helps the Instructor set goals for the student and identify areas where the student needs improvement.

Monitoring Progress:

Kumon’s assessment provides a benchmark for monitoring the student’s progress over time, allowing the Instructor to adjust the learning plan as necessary and ensure that the student is making consistent progress.

The assessment also gives the Instructor the time to observe the student and see how they work through problems.

“Most students who are interested in math use certain kinds of counting methods to do addition, all the way up to junior high students,” Song said. “Some of them count super-fast and efficiently. Sounding out words is not as easy for some reading students.”

Kumon’s instruction method provides students with the ability to advance to high school level material through self-learning. Through its tried-and-true method developed over 65 years ago, students are taught to study independently from an early age and develop both a high level of academic ability and the ability to learn independently.
