How do Kumon’s In-Person and Virtual Classes Work?
Kumon is an after-school math and reading enrichment program that accelerates your child’s learning—from as young as three years old all the way through high school. Kumon goes beyond tutoring, by actively developing critical thinking skills as children progress independently through a carefully crafted math and reading curriculum that supplements school learning. The learning method uses an individualized approach that helps children develop a solid command of math and reading skills. Kumon’s time-tested program uses engaging worksheets and guidance from a certified Instructor to present new concepts and materials, allowing children to develop self-learning skills. Through daily practice and mastery of materials, students increase confidence, improve concentration, and develop better study skills.
How Does Kumon Work?
Kumon is a daily program. Kids dedicate thirty minutes per subject per day. Two days a week, they go to the Kumon Center or attend our new virtual classes. The other five days a week, they complete the work at home.
One of the biggest advantages to Kumon is that we are a worksheet-based program. Whether your child learns in-center, virtually, or a combination of the two, they will always have the support of Kumon Center Staff while also reaping the rewards of pencil to paper learning.
The Kumon Worksheets provide examples of how to solve each problem, helping kids develop the critical thinking skills to figure out new concepts. Kids complete each worksheet within the indicated timeframe, helping them gain speed and accuracy. If any answers are wrong, kids find and correct the error. When correct, they get a 100% on that worksheet and you’ll know that they mastered that lesson.
Each worksheet teaches a lesson that is one small step more advanced than the lesson before, ensuring kids progress through concepts smoothly and with confidence. Worksheet lessons are grouped into levels and as kids advance their sense of perseverance, motivation and enthusiasm for learning grows.
As your children progress in Kumon, you’ll see them develop the skills and study habits that will put them on the path to becoming the confident, independent, self-reliant young adults all parents hope their children will be.
How Do I Get Started?
The first step in your child’s Kumon journey is the Parent Orientation. Whether virtually or in-person, your Kumon Instructor will give your child a Placement Test to gauge their math and reading skills, but your Instructor will be looking at more than your child’s answers. They are also observing their focus, speed, handwriting, and more. Your Instructor will use this assessment to determine the starting point that best ensures your child’s success and they’ll design an individualized lesson plan around their abilities, needs, and goals. Your Instructor will review the assessment and show you and your child the progress chart that will show what they can achieve in their first six months in Kumon.
Booking your Parent Orientation is easy! The majority of our centers have an Online Scheduler, which allows parents to easily book a Parent Orientation online at Kumon.com/locations. If your local center doesn’t, you can make the appointment over the phone by calling 1-800-ABC-Math.
**Due to COVID-19 and increased safety measures, Parent Orientations may occur at the Kumon Center or virtually. Once you book your Parent Orientation, your local Kumon Instructor will confirm the information with you.
