How Kumon’s Curriculum Supports Middle School Learning

Middle School Math

In the levels of the Kumon Math Program that correspond with middle school, students become more familiar with fractions and decimals by using them in word problems and calculating positive and negative numbers. They are introduced to algebraic expressions before learning about equations and linear functions. Once students have strengthened their knowledge of equations and linear functions, they begin working on expansion, factorization and the square roots, setting them up to tackle high school math topics.

Middle School Reading

In the levels of the Kumon Reading Program that correspond with middle school, students advance their reading and writing skills by learning how to answer questions about text. They will begin to dive deeper into a text to develop their own opinion while also considering an outsider’s opinion to obtain a broader view of perspectives. This will lead students into identifying the central idea of a passage which will help to draw reasoned conclusions. Once students have a solid understanding of the main idea of a text, they will begin to summarize one paragraph of a passage, setting them up to tackle high school reading topics.
