Kumon Math Program Completer Donates Over 300 Face Shields

Areen 15-years-old, Math Program Completer

What started as a Christmas gift for this young Georgia teen, has turned into a way of making a difference to others.

As the Covid-19 pandemic hit the U.S. earlier this year, 15-year-old Areen wanted to find a way to help. He began looking at the resources he had at his disposal.  His new 3D printer sparked an idea, and he began rendering designs for protective face shields. Wasting no time, Areen launched his Face Shields 4U project, which aims to create and donate face shields to healthcare professionals, frontline workers, and anyone in need. Areen quickly surpassed his goal of 250 face shields and has proudly donated over 300 shields.

Areen’s father Ashutosh shared with us that his son has always inherently been a leader and always sought out opportunities to give back to his community. It was when Areen’s parents enrolled him in the Kumon Math Program when he was six years old, that he really saw Areen’s attributes flourish.

“When I first joined Kumon, I thought I was only going to learn some math skills that would be helpful in school. It turns out that I was in for a sweet surprise,” said Areen.

My Kumon Instructor, Komal Dodani, has always nurtured each of her students. I developed many useful life skills, too – being organized, responsible and a team player, just to name a few. Ms. Komal is a true philanthropist. She actively supported me in my Face Shields 4U project by spreading the word around and contributing generously. I am thankful to Kumon for shaping me into the person I am today!”

Areen has now increased his goal to 500 face shields to donate, and has now expanded his efforts outside of Georgia to Michigan, as well. His philanthropic spirit has been felt by his local community and beyond.

As for future plans for Areen? He hopes to have a career in the healthcare industry and help save lives.

“All of the skills that I have received at Kumon are invaluable. Kumon provided me the opportunity to help other kids and make a positive impact on their learning experience,” said Areen. “The strong support I received at Kumon helped my community-oriented mindset to develop and flourish. It has really inspired me to continue helping others.”

Areen shares highlights from his Kumon journey.

How has Kumon helped you academically?

Before enrolling in the Kumon Math Program, I was always above grade level. Kumon has helped me to be at least two levels above – thanks to the amazing staff at my Kumon Center that helps all of us learn so effectively.

What do you enjoy most about Kumon?

I enjoy that Kumon is community-oriented and is a relaxing environment. I especially like how Kumon encourages us to pursue excellence.

How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom?

Kumon has completely changed the way I approach problems. By nature, I never quit until I’ve found a solution. Kumon has increased my strength by empowering me with smart ways to solving problems in both math and in life.

What are some activities you enjoy doing outside of school and Kumon?

I enjoy running various community service projects and volunteering with Meals by Grace and at my local soup kitchens. Through these activities, I feel I can give back to the community and help everyone out.

If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be?

It would be Kumon: K – Keen, U – Unique, M – Motivating, O – Outstanding, N – Nurturing.

What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon?

You may have made the right decision and have joined a community that will shape you. You will develop many skills that will help you not only academically, but in life as well. Enjoy the ride!
