Kumon Reading Completer Named co-champion of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee
Ansun Sujoe is one incredibly accomplished seventh grader.
Not only did he complete the Kumon Reading Program, but recently Ansun was named the co-champion of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Preparing to compete in a national spelling bee was no easy feat. When asked how he prepared for the spelling bee, Ansun stated, “I took words from the dictionary which were interesting and I analyzed the word, definition and language of origin to make the word easier to remember.” He credits Kumon with enhancing his reading comprehension ability. “Since the spelling bee included vocabulary in the written tests for the past two years, the Kumon Reading Program helped me to do well in answering the vocabulary questions.”
Ansun’s parents enrolled him in Kumon to not only help him master basic concepts, but also to help him develop an advanced level of reading comprehension. They explained, “Kumon has trained him to work independently, develop concentration and to be fast and consistent in school.” Evidence of the skills he’s developed in Kumon were on full display during Ansun’s participation in the national spelling bee. “We felt ecstatic and could not believe it,” his parents exclaimed.
Ansun has spent two to four hours each day for the last four years studying for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. When he wasn’t preparing for the spelling bee, Ansun found time to enjoy many other hobbies. In addition to playing the piano, bassoon and guitar, he also enjoys playing basketball and soccer. Ansun would one day like to pursue a technical field such as computer engineering.
“I am most proud of my achievements in the spelling bee because I have studied for years to meet this goal,” Ansun stated. “Kumon helped me concentrate and focus on studying and instilled a love of learning in me.”
