Mental math <\/span>is<\/span> the process of doing calculations in one\u2019s head rather than on paper or by using a calculator<\/span>. It <\/span>can improve a child\u2019s math fluency, allowing the<\/span>m <\/span>to <\/span>study<\/span> more easily <\/span>in<\/span> higher level mathematics. <\/span>Developing the skill of\u202fmental math through simple, but fun, math activities is a fantastic way to not only stimulate your child\u2019s mental math abilities, but another way of improving their knowledge of the number facts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span>Here are a few of our favorite activities that are fun and support mental math skills:<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>Multiplication War<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Organize<\/span> a deck of cards<\/span> by face value \u2013 a pile for 2s, a pile for 3s, and so on. <\/span>Assign the picture cards a value of 10<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> and the aces a value of 1. Each player <\/span>will <\/span>turn two cards face up, read the <\/span>number<\/span>s<\/span> and multiply them together, and say<\/span> the answer. <\/span>For children just learning their multiplication tables, start with the 2 <\/span>pile<\/span>, and have the<\/span>m<\/span> practice in order<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>2x<\/span>2, 2×3, 2×4 and so on. After they have mastered the 2s, <\/span>move<\/span> on to <\/span>3s<\/span>. <\/span>By building their memorization of the multiplication tables in order, your child will master <\/span>their<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>multiplication facts<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202fin no time!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After your child knows their tables for 1 through 9, you can shuffle the cards and have them draw at random. <\/span>For example, if your child draws a 7 and an 8, they <\/span>would<\/span> say, \u201c7\u00d78=56.\u201d If you draw a 6 and a 4, you say, \u201c6\u00d74=24.\u201d Because their product is larger, they win the four cards and put them at the bottom of their pile. Continue the game until one player runs out of cards.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Total<\/span> Shopping <\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

While out shopping, <\/span>perhaps at<\/span> the grocery store, ask your child to keep a running tally of the bill. Every time you put something into the cart, tell them how much it costs (you can round up to the nearest dollar to make it easier). Not only will your child get to practice their mental math skills, but <\/span>you\u2019ll<\/span> have an idea of how much <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> spending as you go, and <\/span>you\u2019ll<\/span> also know the total <\/span>amount of the spend <\/span>before even getting to the register! The final bill will confirm whether your child calculated correctly, or if they came close!<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Number Jeopardy<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pick a number. Give your child one minute to find as many ways as they can to make the number using addition, subtraction, <\/span>multiplication<\/span> and division.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the Kumon method, we focus on progress through and master<\/span>y<\/span> of the four operations \u2013 addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Within the addition, the Kumon method starts with plus ones, in sums up to 10, and then up to 20, all displayed horizontally. <\/span>Plus<\/span> one through plus ten are introduced methodically in this manner. For subtraction, students <\/span>start by subtracting one, then two, then three<\/span> and for m<\/span>ultiplication<\/span>, the focus is on mastering one math fact at a time, <\/span>starting with the 2 times tables<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Learning some basic, but useful, mental math strategies can work to <\/span>greatly improve<\/span> your child\u2019s self-confidence.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>As you can see, practicing developing mental math for kids can be fun!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
