When most people think of academic success<\/em>, they often picture an A+ or 100% mark fixed atop a test, or a teacher saying that a child is first in the class. However, in Kumon, success is displayed in a more individualistic way. It isn’t just about reaching goals, avoiding mistakes, or having children enjoy completing their worksheets every day (though that is always wonderful!). Instead, it’s about guiding your child to become a confident and independent learner who finds patience and joy in the learning journey.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Kumon, success can look like growth, consistency, tenacity, independence, and the development of skills that last a lifetime. When we see these traits blossoming in your child, that is our measure of success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enjoying Learning<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It all begins with the comfortable starting point designed to foster a sense of accomplishment and encourage students to approach their initial worksheets with confidence. Occasional errors may still occur, but students should feel capable of completing their work. They can take pride in their ability to work efficiently and accurately from the beginning of enrollment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early achievement at Kumon means completing work quickly, experiencing satisfaction with progress, and finding work manageable. This positive foundation promotes consistent engagement with daily study, which benefits students as they reach more complex material throughout the program.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cI can do it!\u201d attitude and the tenacity to work through challenges are not exclusive to successful Kumon students, but rather are traits of many successful individuals. Grades and scores often motivate students in typical classrooms, but Kumon goes further. True achievement is seen in students who are motivated, diligent, and able to study with focus and persistence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning from Mistakes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Watching your child face challenges can be tough for any parent. While it’s tempting to step in and help, becoming an independent learner means accepting that mistakes are part of the journey.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a student’s perspective, making a mistake can feel discouraging or even embarrassing, especially when they are trying their best. However, in Kumon, mistakes are treated differently than in many other learning environments. Rather than seeing errors as failures, Kumon views the ability to learn from mistakes as essential for developing perseverance and problem-solving skills.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kumon Instructors expect students to approach corrections methodically: first, by identifying exactly where the mistake occurred, then, consider why it happened, and finally make thoughtful corrections. This approach not only reinforces the learning process but also encourages patience and resilience.  <\/p>\n\n\n

As worksheet levels become more challenging, the patience and persistence cultivated through learning from mistakes become even more important and worthy of recognition. When students are guided to correct their specific errors, such as fixing a single misplaced digit or adjusting an extra letter, they learn to pay close attention to detail without feeling overwhelmed by having to redo entire sections. This correction process helps build confidence and efficiency, teaching students that setbacks are simply part of the journey toward mastery. By embracing their mistakes, reflecting on them, and trying again, students discover that each error is a step toward greater understanding and achievement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing\u00a0Consistency, Abilities &\u00a0Learning New Skills<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Achievement often shines through in a child’s proud smile after completing a challenging worksheet or mastering a new concept. These \u201cI did it!\u201d moments boost confidence and motivate students to keep going, even as tasks become more difficult. Kumon\u2019s focus on daily study, maintaining a steady workload, and gradually progressing through the levels set the stage for success.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we want this for our students, sometimes life gets in the way. In those instances, success can be as simple as course-correcting to increase study days moving forward. Such consistency builds discipline and solid study habits that benefit students well beyond their school years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When practicing daily, another key element is utilizing Kumon approaches which can differ from how school might teach certain topics. We strongly encourage mental calculation, prompting students to approach problems efficiently and without the need for unnecessary work. For instance, an Instructor might ask a student to solve math questions from left to right, use estimation, or reduce reliance on finger counting or writing borrows and carries. When a child is able to pivot to new ways of problem-solving, a world of possibilities is unlocked.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our Reading program, learning a new vocabulary word, grammar concept, or finishing an Recommended Reading List (RRL) book can be the key to success and continued growth.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For our youngest learners, holding a pencil properly for the first time, and learning a proper stroke order for letter writing, is a huge win that will carry them through the rest of their life. Adapting to new learning methods, or developing a new skill entirely, is a measure of success that is immeasurable for a student\u2019s overall academic growth.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s Not a Sprint, It\u2019s a Journey<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

With all that\u00a0Kumon students\u00a0accomplish\u00a0every\u00a0day, it\u2019s important to remember\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0Kumon\u00a0program\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0designed to produce instant academic results.\u00a0In addition to\u00a0building academic ability,\u00a0success is built from\u00a0gradually developing these\u00a0soft skills\u00a0and\u00a0fostering\u00a0a mindset of\u00a0independence\u00a0and persistence. With each worksheet finished, each error fixed, and every small success celebrated, your child\u00a0gets stronger. Over time, they learn much more than math or reading; they develop the confidence to overcome challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what does success mean here?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
