This exercise helps your mind become stronger by doing it over and over again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From Dr. Seuss to Mother Goose, nursery rhymes are often the first introduction to poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Most infants and toddlers are instantly drawn to the rhythm of the words.<\/p>\n<p>The repetition of rhymes are not only fun and stimulating for young children, but they are critical to the development of early\u00a0literacy\u00a0skills.<\/p>\n<p>As children get older, that same love for rhymes and rhythm can continue to develop\u00a0through poetry. The first and last lines of a\u202fHaiku\u202fhave 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme.<\/p>\n<p><i>An old silent pond (5)<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>From leaf to leaf hops a frog (7)<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Looking for a meal (5)<\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h5>Limerick<\/h5>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0A limerick is a silly poem with five lines.\u202fIt is\u00a0often funny or nonsensical.\u00a0The first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other and have the same\u00a0number of syllables (typically 7\u00a0to 10).\u00a0The third and fourth lines rhyme with each other and have the same number of syllables (typically\u00a05 to 7).<\/p>\n<p><i>There once was a wonderful star<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Who<\/i><i>\u00a0thought she would go very far<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Until she fell down\u202f<\/i><br \/>\n<i>And looked like a clown<\/i><br \/>\n<i>She knew she would never go far.<\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h5>Acrostic<\/h5>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0A form of poetry\u00a0where the first, last or other letters in a line spell out a particular word or phrase. The most common and simple form of an\u202facrostic poem\u202fis where the first letters of each line spell out the word or phrase.\u00a0This type of poetry is very fun for kids.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>E<\/i><\/b><i>aster is a great time of year<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><i>nd everyone likes to each chocolate\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>S<\/i><\/b><i>o make sure you don\u2019t eat too much<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>T<\/i><\/b><i>ogether we can hide\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>E<\/i><\/b><i>aster eggs and find them<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>R<\/i><\/b><i>emember not to eat too much candy<\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h5>Rhyming<\/h5>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0There are different kinds of rhyming poems to explore.<\/p>\n<p><u>Couplets<\/u>\u202fare made up of two lines whose last words rhyme. They are often silly.<\/p>\n<p><i>My cat ate a mouse\u202f<\/i><br \/>\n<i>And<\/i><i>\u00a0then brought it in the house.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><u>Triplets<\/u>\u202fare made up of three lines. The rhyming pattern can be AAA or ABA.<\/p>\n<p><i>What a fine day<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>To go out to play<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>In the month of May.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><u>Quatrains<\/u>\u202fare made up of four lines. The rhyming pattern can be AABB or ABAB.<\/p>\n<p><i>I never saw a purple cow,\u202f<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I never hope to see one:\u202f<\/i><br \/>\n<i>But I can tell you, anyhow,\u202f<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I&#8217;d rather see than be one.<\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><b>Family Poetry Challenge.\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve introduced your children to different forms of poetry, and understand why does reading poems build our imagination and creativity, find out which form they find interesting and encourage them to give it a try.<\/p>\n<p>Make it a family activity and share your poems with each other.
