{"id":6570,"date":"2019-02-22T16:18:18","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T21:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/?p=6570"},"modified":"2023-08-18T13:57:16","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T17:57:16","slug":"discover-how-this-student-learned-to-love-new-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/discover-how-this-student-learned-to-love-new-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover How This Student Learned to Love New Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Nathan, 13-years-old, Level O Math<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>Before even entering high school, 13-year-old Nathan can say he\u2019s working on advanced calculus concepts and is on his way to completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/math-program\" aria-label=\"Kumon Math Program\">Kumon Math Program<\/a>. \u00a0Having been enrolled for seven years, Nathan credits Kumon for shaping him into the successful student he is now.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6573 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Nathan_1-e1550769695985-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"Nathan standing in a white shirt in front of a gold background\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Nathan_1-e1550769695985-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Nathan_1-e1550769695985-768x951.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAfter years of being challenged by numbers and puzzling concepts, I\u2019m proud to say that Kumon has strengthened my ability as a student,\u201d said Nathan. \u201cI first learned patience, followed by persistence and resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>Nathan continues to look forward to challenging concepts in Kumon, as he feels a sense of pride once he masters them.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>Outside of the classroom, Nathan runs long distance on the track and field team in the spring and plays ultimate frisbee with friends. Recently, he learned to design 3D printable parts for robots such as kick-offs, an alignment tool, and more. His new-found skill in 3D printing has helped his robotics team in competitions.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>Just last year, Nathan and his friends won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.battleofthebooks.org\/\" aria-label=\"Battle of the Book\u00e2\u0080\u0099s\">Battle of the Book\u2019s<\/a> competition in his school district. The competition is a voluntary reading program for students in grades 3-12 and inspires students to read in a fun competition with friends.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>While Nathan remains undecided on his career, he is considering a future in robotic engineering or finance.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-6574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/KSC-3720-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Nathan laughing at the Student Conference\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/KSC-3720-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/KSC-3720-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s many accomplishments were recognized when he was one of 55 students selected to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had the opportunity to speak to Nathan about his Kumon journey.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>How has Kumon helped you academically?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/math-program\" aria-label=\"Kumon Math Program\">Kumon Math Program<\/a> has laid down a foundation of basic math skills, allowing me to expand beyond that. I feel my confidence is better compared to what it was when I first enrolled. I have developed a mental resistance to giving up. I have grown to like math the most out of all subjects in school. My ability to adapt is far more flexible, and I\u2019ve developed a tough resilience to make it through any challenge.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>What did it mean to you attending the Student Conference? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When I received the news that I was invited to attend the Student Conference, I felt lucky and privileged. I met other students who I shared a lot in common with. The speakers shared their Kumon journey and I felt they were very relatable. It reminded me that I am on the right track and will be able to succeed.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>What advice do you have for other Kumon Students?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Treat Kumon as if it\u2019s a mandatory hobby. Embrace the obstacles, focus, avoid procrastination, and stay curious.
