<\/div>\n

The education of science<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>technology, engineering, and math widely referred to as STEM, has gained popularity in recent years.\u00a0<\/span>With the increase in awareness and programs available for young students, there has been an emergence in STEM-related careers, and th<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0demand will only continue to\u00a0<\/span>rise<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\"VarnicaAt the 2015\u00a0<\/span>White House Science Fair<\/span><\/a>, former U.S. President Barack Obama addressed the attendees noting the importance of STEM<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cAs a society, we have to celebrate outstanding work by young people in science at least as much as we do Super Bowl winners. Because superstar biologists and engineers and rocket scientists and robot-builders\u2026 they\u2019re what\u2019s going to transform our society. They\u2019re the folks who are going to come up with cures for diseases and new sources of energy, and help us build healthier, more successful societies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

13-year-old Varnica is an example of one of those young minds that has risen to the challenge.\u00a0<\/span>Having gained a sense of independence\u00a0<\/span>and confidence, she forged a path for herself in exploring the world of computer coding and robotics.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Varnica credits Kumon\u00a0<\/span>for helping her gain<\/span>\u00a0independence and boosting her confidence<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0<\/span>allowing<\/span>\u00a0herself to come out of her comfort zone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\"Varnica\u201cKumon has helped me outside of the classroom in many different ways,\u201d said Varnica. \u201cSince I have been enrolled in Kumon, I have been ahead of my\u00a0<\/span>peers in school\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 allowing for time to do other things I enjoy like coding and robotics. Kumon has encouraged me to be more confident and independent, which is why I have joined various clubs and teams in my spare time.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

You see, Varnica enrolled in Kumon when she was only 3-years-old<\/span>\u00a0and since became a curious learner<\/span>\u00a0who is<\/span>\u00a0always looking for more.\u00a0<\/span>Varnica completed the\u00a0<\/span>Kumon Reading Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0before entering 7<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0grade.\u00a0<\/span>She now has a solid grasp on literature, having already analyzed notable literary works such as\u00a0<\/span>William Golding\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Lord of the Flies\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and Oscar Wilde\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>The Importance of Being Earnest<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>Varnica is even studying above grade level\u00a0<\/span>as she is\u00a0<\/span>working on algebraic concepts like factorization and\u00a0<\/span>quadratic equations<\/span>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span>Kumon Math Program<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Varnica\u00a0<\/span>first discovered her love for coding and robotics when she took a chance and joined the school\u2019s robotics club.<\/span>\u00a0Immediately<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0she became drawn to\u00a0<\/span>coding<\/span>\u00a0and later eve<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>learned JavaScript coding for her robot. Intrigued by how coding works and the endless capabilities it brings, Varnica sees a future in\u00a0<\/span>programming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Her natural talent for coding and robotics lead her to being chosen to attend the\u00a0<\/span>Girls in STEM Conference at her school<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This\u00a0<\/span>conference<\/span>\u00a0gives young girls\u00a0<\/span>an<\/span>\u00a0opportunity to participate in workshops and listen to influential speakers from across all STEM fields.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Conferences\u00a0<\/span>like Girls in STEM<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cultivates and inspires brilliant young minds to embrace their talents and explore the world of STEM-related careers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

When Varnica isn\u2019t coding, she enjoys swimming and playing the piano. She has even taken up ice skating as she enjoys the thrill of gliding on the ice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Varnica<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0hard work and discipline didn\u2019t go unnoticed, as she was one of 55 students selected to attend the\u00a0<\/span>2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had the opportunity to speak to\u00a0<\/span>Varnica<\/span>\u00a0about her Kumon journey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How has Kumon helped you inside of the classroom<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\"VarnicaKumon has helped me in\u00a0<\/span>so many ways<\/span>\u00a0academically. I\u00a0<\/span>can complete my school work with ease, allowing time to solve more advanced equations. Recording my time in Kumon has increased my speed, and challenges me to reach specific goals. I now have an academic edge over my peers since I have already been introduced to many of the concepts in Kumon that are being taught in school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you enjoy most about Kumon?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

What I enjoy most about Kumon is that i<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0always gives you a challenge that turns into a learning opportunity. When I learn a new concept in Kumon that I find intriguing, it encourage<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0me to want to do more.\u00a0<\/span>I love the independence I have gained as well. I feel a sense of pride when I\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0answer a difficult question correctly by applying what I\u2019ve previously learned.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you could sum up your Kumon experience in one word, what would it be<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n

What did it mean to you attending the Student Conference?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

It was such an honor to attend the Student Conference. It was an amazing experience being able to meet the speakers and other Kumon Students just like me. I am very thankful\u00a0<\/span>that I was given the<\/span>\u00a0opportunity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What advice do you have for other Kumon Students?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

My advice for other Kumon Students would be to remain persistent and stick with it. Kumon will become challenging at time<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 that\u2019s the truth. You may feel like you can\u2019t do the work or even want to give up. Take the times you are struggling as a challenge and work through it, it will help you become a stronger student in Kumon. Any challenge is a learning opportunity and will encourage you to do better and give it your all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
