From increased workloads, to preparing for the ever-dreaded middle-school transition, to dealing with the constant mounting pressure to \u201cfit in\u201d, paving your own path may seem scarier than ever during this time. However, that\u2019s not the case for 10-year-old Jessica. As the only female player in her travel baseball league, she doesn\u2019t mind enduring the laughs and looks from the opposing team, because she knows once she strikes them all out on the pitching mound, the sneering will stop. Jessica is an exceptional athlete who has stepped out of her comfort zone to pursue her passion for baseball. Practicing seven days a week for several hours a day takes more perseverance and dedication than many possess, yet Jessica keeps up with it no matter what challenges are thrown her way. Off the pitching mound, Jessica plays competitive basketball and enjoys participating in her Girl Scout troop. Unbelievably, Jessica finds time to study high school math and reading, years beyond grade level, through the Kumon Math and Reading Program.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cKumon has always taught me to persevere even when things get difficult,\u201d said Jessica. \u201cI will never forget a specific game where I wasn\u2019t pitching my best, but I worked hard and fought through it with my teammates and won the game. I believe Kumon helped me be tough in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-7367\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicapodium-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica speaks at the poidum at the student conference\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicapodium-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicapodium-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicapodium.jpg 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Jessica\u2019s parents enrolled her in Kumon at age five, where she started out learning how to count and sound out words. In just a few short years, she has advanced to mastering linear equations and writing summary analyses on complex passages. Since she can complete her school homework in a snap, Jessica has ample time to focus on her ultimate goal: to become the first female major league player. If that doesn\u2019t work out though, Jessica has the perfect back up plan \u2013 to become a teacher, and maybe even open a Kumon Center of her own!<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite things about Kumon is how much it challenges me,\u201d said Jessica. \u201cI\u2019m not going to lie \u2013 it can be frustrating, but when I see how far ahead of my peers I am, I know it\u2019s all worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s impressive accomplishments along with her hard work and focus helped get her selected to attend Kumon\u2019s 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Annual Student Conference in Chicago, Illinois. There, she was able to connect with 55 other peers from around North America with a similar desire to unlock their full potential. We had a chance to talk with Jessica about her Kumon journey, and her hopes for the future.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>How has Kumon helped you academically? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Kumon has made me a better Math and English student which I expected, but it has also helped me learn to use my time wisely.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-7366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicabaseball2-146x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica points her bat at the camera in her baseball uniform\" width=\"146\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicabaseball2-146x300.jpg 146w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicabaseball2.jpg 574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Kumon is not always easy.\u00a0 That challenge has always taught me to persevere even when things get tough.\u00a0 I will never forget pitching in a very tough game.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t pitching my best, but I worked hard and fought through it with my teammates helping me win the game.\u00a0 I believe Kumon helped me be tough.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>What is the most beneficial thing you\u2019ve learned in Kumon thus far?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned to persevere in situations that are tough.\u00a0 I felt so bad when I didn\u2019t pass my last Kumon Math GII test, but it only made me want to work harder.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying again very soon.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>What achievements are you most proud of?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I used to be most proud of my achievements as a girl playing baseball.\u00a0 I can\u2019t lie \u2013 it\u2019s fun striking out the boys.\u00a0 However, now I think I\u2019m most proud of being selected to attend the Kumon Conference.\u00a0 It was one of the proudest days of my life.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I would tell students that Kumon is hard.\u00a0 I would not lie to them.\u00a0 But I would also tell them how much Kumon has helped me in school, and how much it has helped me face new challenges.\u00a0 I would totally tell them to do it!<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-7365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicadad-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica poses with her dad in front of a Kumon backdrop\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicadad-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/jessicadad.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>How did you feel when you found out you were selected to attend the Student Conference?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I was so excited, but nervous as well.\u00a0 I knew I wouldn\u2019t know anyone at the conference, but I couldn\u2019t wait to meet some new friends. My dad called me at school to let me know that I was selected.\u00a0 I wanted to scream in the principal\u2019s office!\u00a0 I thought that day, \u201cI can do anything in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Who is your biggest inspiration and why? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My biggest inspiration is my daddy.\u00a0 He put me in Kumon even though I didn\u2019t know why I was doing it when I first started.\u00a0 He always tells me, my brother, and sister that we do not have to be the smartest students in class, but we have to work the hardest.\u00a0 I will one day tell my students that when I\u2019m a teacher.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/success-stories\/\" aria-label=\"Discover even more student success stories.\">Discover even more student success stories.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica, 10 years old, Math Level H, Reading Level GII<\/p>\n<p>The end of elementary school is a scary time for many students.
