When the director declares \u201cEn Garde!\u201d to signal the fencers to begin, Ellen quickly identifies her opponent\u2019s weakness and plans her attack.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For ten years, Ellen has worked to master the art of fencing through dedicated practice. Ellen credits much of her strength and success in fencing to her time in Kumon.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7571\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Ellie-Fencing-300x169.png\" alt=\"student giving a thumbs up while wearing her fencing gear\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Ellie-Fencing-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Ellie-Fencing-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Ellie-Fencing.png 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKumon has helped me excel in fencing, a sport I do competitively,\u201d said Ellen. \u201cI use Kumon\u2019s self-learning philosophy to study my opponents\u2019 weaknesses and quickly come up with a solution. By applying this in my matches, I\u2019ve been able to win more bouts.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ellen\u2019s passion for fencing goes beyond competing. In 2014, she founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/americankidsfencing.weebly.com\/\" aria-label=\"American Fencing Association for Children and Teens\">American Fencing Association for Children and Teens<\/a> (AFACT). Ellen\u2019s mission is to take a stand against bullying, raise mental health awareness, and introduce fencing to children in her local community. Through my efforts, I\u2019ve grown the fencing program and continue to support kids in anti-bullying \u2013 ultimately making my community a better place to live in.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ellen was one of 56 students selected for Kumon\u2019s 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Annual Student Conference in Chicago, Illinois.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ellen-and-Mino-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"student shaking hands with the instructor in front of curtain\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ellen-and-Mino-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ellen-and-Mino-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Ellen-and-Mino.jpg 885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was absolutely elated when I found out I was selected,\u201d said Ellen. \u201cI didn\u2019t think I had a chance of being selected, so when I found out I was really shocked.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ellen and the rest of the attendees had the opportunity to learn from each other through educational activities designed to foster team building, group discussion, critical thinking and creativity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 9px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI really enjoyed being at the Student Conference,\u201d said Ellen. \u201cI met a lot of other students who had similar interests as me. I\u2019m now learning college level calculus while only in high school. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/reading-program\" aria-label=\"Kumon Reading Program\">Kumon Reading Program<\/a> has expanded my vocabulary and introduced me to many great works of literature.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you continue to stay motivated in Kumon? <\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite my busy schedule, I continue to stay motivated in Kumon. When the work becomes challenging, I take small breaks to refresh my mind. I also like to set goals and reward myself when I achieve a certain level or complete my work. I like to think of the long-term benefits that it will bring to me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do you want to be when you grow up?<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My future goal is to become an actress and a writer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who\u2019s your biggest inspiration and why? <\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Author Rick Riordan is my biggest inspiration. He is a wonderful writer and his books are for all ages. Unlike most authors, he incorporates a lot of diversity in his books that every reader can relate to. His books are also very funny and he\u2019s able to teach readers mythology through his own marvelous plots.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon? <\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a long journey, so be patient with yourself. Stick with it because you\u2019re more than capable of doing it.
