Mai, 11-years-old<\/em>, Math Level J, Reading Program Completer<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

12-year-old Mai is far from a typical \u2013sixth\ngrader. In addition to being trilingual, she is a competitive\nfigure skater, capable of moves you\u2019d see watching the Olympics. She is also an\nadvanced piano player and enjoys participating in her school\u2019s debate\ntournaments. Mai even received the top score in her entire school for in a math\ncontest she participated in, proving that she is no stranger to perseverance\nand diligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of it\nall, although Mai is only in the sixth grade, she\nis studying high school level math and reading through Kumon\u2019s Math and Reading\nProgram. Her\nparents enrolled her in both subjects at just three years old, and since then,\nMai has never looked back. She completed the reading program in the fifth grade\nand is currently mastering quadratic equations and inequalities in the in the\nmath program.  In fact, Mai\u2019s expertise\nand enjoyment of the early Kumon levels led her to take up volunteering as an\nassistant at her local center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKumon gives me the challenge and the\nfulfillment that I strive for when I advance to the next level,\u201d said Mai. \u201cI\nalso enjoy volunteering and teaching at Kumon because it gives me the joy to\ngive back to the community while re-learning and reviewing topics that I have\nmastered already.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Mai enjoys helping at the\nlocal Kumon Center, when it comes to a career, she hopes to work in cancer\nresearch to save lives and better the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of her accomplishments both\ninside and outside of the classroom, Mai was one of 56 students from across\nNorth America that was selected to attend Kumon\u2019s 3rd<\/sup> annual student\nconference. The conference, which took place in Chicago, Illinois on July 10,\n2019, provided Mai with the opportunity to connect with like-minded and equally\nimpressive peers from all across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. We had\nthe chance to chat with Mai about her Kumon journey, her inspirations, and her\nhopes for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n

How has\nKumon helped you academically?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Kumon has enhanced my reading and math\nskills and helped me stay ahead of my school level. Kumon has also taught me\nhow to persevere and be diligent, and that by working hard, anything is\npossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has\nKumon helped you outside of the classroom?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Kumon has helped me boost my confidence,\nencouraged me to work hard, and helped me to believe that anything is possible\nif you set a goal and work hard. Kumon has also greatly helped me manage my\ntime and taught me how to self-learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the\nmost beneficial thing you\u2019ve learned in Kumon thus far?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I love the philosophy of Kumon and how\nit\u2019s structured, and how important it is to master the fundamentals before\nmoving on to new concepts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nachievements are you most proud of?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Getting medals at my figure skating\ncompetitions, completing the Kumon Reading Program in the fifth grade, and to\nbe chosen to attend the Kumon Conference in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to kids just\nstarting Kumon?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I would tell them that, no matter how\nhard it gets, no matter how challenging your worksheets are, even if they seem\nimpossible at first glance \u2013 never give up and never stop trying.<\/p>\n\n\n

What was your experience like at the Student\nConference, and what was your favorite part?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It\nwas an amazing, inspiring and a very memorable experience that I will never\nforget! My favorite parts were meeting new friends from all around North\nAmerica, listening to the inspiring guest speakers\u2019 speeches, solving hard\npuzzles in groups, taking pictures with the other Kumon Students, and meeting\nthe Kumon North America President Mr. Tanabe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is your biggest inspiration and\nwhy?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My mom is my biggest inspiration because of her unconditional love and her sacrifices in raising me as a single mom since my Dad passed away when I was five years old. She is the fundamental reason for my values, and her enormous support and motivation helps me to go through difficulties in life. She will get mad and frustrated at me sometimes, but it\u2019s because she wants the best for me, and I wouldn\u2019t be here if she did not enroll me in Kumon.
