There\u2019s no denying it. We\u2019re all having a difficult time right now. \u00a0Parents, in particular, are facing unique challenges. How can you keep your kids occupied, engaged, and calm at such a complicated time? Here are some tips on how to make this uncertain time a bit more comfortable at home.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Talk to Them<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Kids are like sponges\u2014they absorb everything. Even young children cannot escape the ever-present talk and news about the coronavirus pandemic. Experts at the Child Mind Institute<\/a> recommend answering your children\u2019s questions clearly and honestly, without giving them more information than necessary. Remind them (if hopefully true) that your family is healthy and assure them that you are taking steps to prevent the spread of the disease. Be mindful of how you speak around them and the programs you are watching. If you remain calm in your kids\u2019 presence and limit their access to potentially scary news stories, you can help keep the situation in perspective.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Take Precautions<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Telling your kids they are safe is important, but showing<\/em> them is even better. Model good hygiene habits by washing your hands for 20 seconds, coughing and sneezing into your elbow instead of your hands, and cleaning surfaces frequently. Involve your littlest kids by taking the Baby Shark Handwash Challenge<\/a> and encourage older kids by rewarding them<\/a> for practicing good hygiene. If your children see that you\u2019re taking every precaution to keep them safe, they will feel reassured.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Take advantage of extra family time and have dinner together, play board games, and read together at bedtime. If you can safely play outside, get out of the house for some exercise<\/a> as a family. \u00a0Plan virtual play dates with their friends from school whenever you can. Games like charades or \u201cI Spy\u201d can be easily adapted for a videocall, plus your kids will love the chance just to tell their friends what they\u2019ve been up to at home! \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Keep Up a Routine<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

According to the National Association for School Psychologists<\/a>, establishing and maintaining a routine can play a big part in your kids\u2019 well-being. Keeping up a routine during a tumultuous time can give your children a sense of normalcy that will help keep them calm. Set consistent mealtimes and bedtimes, just as you would if they were physically going to school. Schedule out some activities during the day, like playtime, exercise, and a time for learning. Everyday activities like Kumon can help keep the routine consistent. Scheduling out your child\u2019s time can also ensure that you<\/em> have time to yourself to work or rest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
