Apphia, 13-years-old<\/em>, Reading\nProgram Completer<\/em> & Math Program\nCompleter<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 13-years-old, Apphia has quickly learned the value of hard work and continues to motivate herself even in the most challenging times. Her tenacity shines through on anything she puts her mind to. As a first-degree black belt in taekwondo and an accomplished cello player, Apphia continues to take pride in her extra-curricular activities. <\/p>\n\n\n

At the end of the day, it\u2019s not just about the accolades for\nApphia. Her true nature and spirit are giving back to others in any way she\ncan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apphia\u2019s parents enrolled her in Kumon when she was only\nfive years old. At an early age, she gained an academic edge over her peers and\ncredits Kumon for shaping her into becoming an altruistic individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel proud when I\u2019m a helpful person. Kumon has shaped me\ninto the person I am today,\u201d said Apphia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like helping people and I think it\u2019s a part of my nature.\nI help in many ways from just simply holding a door to taking care of babies.\nIn taekwondo, I help younger kids learn and review new techniques. In church, I\nhelp by taking care of the infants while the parents are attending service. In\nschool, I usually help people with their work. At Kumon, I put homework in the\nstudents\u2019 folders. Those are the many ways I help, and I am proud of it.\nWithout helping others, the world would be a bad place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the years, Apphia has become passionate about\nlearning biology, anatomy, and genetics. Although she\u2019s unsure of what the\nfuture holds for her career, she believes a future in the medical field is the\nperfect fit for her. Apphia envisions herself continuing to help others\nthroughout her life.<\/p>\n\n\n

Apphia\u2019s accomplishments were recognized as she was one of 56 students selected for Kumon\u2019s 3rd<\/sup> Annual Student Conference in Chicago, Illinois. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was so ecstatic when I found out I was selected,\u201d said Apphia.\n\u201cI didn\u2019t believe it at first and read the email several times. It didn\u2019t seem\nreal, but I was really happy that I got selected to attend the Student\nConference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apphia and the rest of the attendees were celebrated for their accomplishments and encouraged to aspire to become individuals who tackle some of the world\u2019s challenges.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really\nenjoyed my time at the Student Conference. If I had to choose my favorite part,\nit would be the escape room activity,\u201d said Apphia. \u201cIt was so nice to solve\npuzzles with my fellow peers that I had so much in common with! It was nice to\nchallenge each other, and I really liked meeting Mino Tanabe, the President of\nKumon North America, Inc.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you enjoy\nmost about Kumon?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I really enjoy that students can learn at their own pace. Kumon allows us students to be able to do things at our own steady pace. You never go too fast or too slow. It\u2019s also nice to learn academically to keep up with school and to also get ahead of our peers. These are the two things that I enjoy most about Kumon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has Kumon helped\nyou outside of the classroom?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kumon has helped me\nin and out of the classroom, and it reminds me that I can take on big\nchallenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you continue\nto stay motivated?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I motivate myself by setting a game plan for the day. After\nI come back from school, I take out my planner and write down all of the stuff\nI have to accomplish for the day. Then, I make time slots for each task\nallowing me time to still complete my Kumon Worksheets. When I get stuck on a\nchallenging question, I turn to my sister for help since she has already\ncompleted the Kumon Math Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could sum up\nyour Kumon experience in one word, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s your favorite\nbook and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My favorite book is \u201cHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire\u201d by\nJ.K. Rowling. I like the whole series, but this particular book stood out the\nmost to me. The important lesson of the book is to persevere even when you\nfail. <\/p>\n\n\n

Who\u2019s your biggest\ninspiration and why? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My biggest inspiration is Suji Kang. One day, I hope I can\nbe in her place and win a lot of taekwondo events like she did. I want to be\nespecially good at poomsae and make it to the world championships for taekwondo\nlike Suji Kang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A piece of advice I would give to students starting Kumon,\nis to persevere and go at it. It might be too hard or too easy, but just do the\nwork that you\u2019re assigned. The end result will please you, and you will be\nproud of what you have accomplished. Just do what you are doing and keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
