While parents are eager for their children to develop a love for reading, getting a reluctant reader to pick up a book, let alone read it, is a big challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReading is too hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReading is boring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReading isn\u2019t for me.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\nare three reasons why some children might be reluctant to read and what parents\ncan do to change their minds. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/suad-kamardeen-8PyNdtGL4Bg-unsplash2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/suad-kamardeen-8PyNdtGL4Bg-unsplash2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/suad-kamardeen-8PyNdtGL4Bg-unsplash2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/suad-kamardeen-8PyNdtGL4Bg-unsplash2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reading is hard.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong> <\/strong>From vocabulary to fluency to comprehension, there are several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/what-skills-does-your-child-need-to-develop-before-learning-to-read\/\" aria-label=\"skills that children must master while they are learning to read\">skills that children must master while they are learning to read<\/a>, and it\u2019s not always easy. Making the process fun and digestible is a great way to keep your child engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 1: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read books to your children that are above their reading level. The content will likely be more exciting than the early reader books they are reading on their own. Select a funny book at your child\u2019s reading level. Your child is looking for interesting and motivating reading material. It\u2019s important to merge your child\u2019s passion and hobbies with their reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/how-to-instill-a-love-for-reading-in-your-child-this-summer\/\" aria-label=\"instill the love for reading\">instill the love for reading<\/a> in your child this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 1: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it\u2019s baseball, music or space travel, get a subscription to a magazine on that topic. Also consider general magazines for children, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highlights.com\/\" aria-label=\"Highlights\">Highlights<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeforkids.com\/\" aria-label=\"Time for Kids\">Time for Kids<\/a>. Magazine content is typically shorter than books, which allows children to read the material in its entirety in smaller doses. And, if it has your child\u2019s name on the address label, a magazine becomes a personal invitation to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip 2: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children are never too old for picture books. In fact, many picture books are created with older readers in mind. It\u2019s something developed over time.\nWhether they feel like they can\u2019t read as fast as their friends or they fear\nreading aloud, there are many things that could trigger a dislike for reading.\nIt\u2019s important to encourage your children to read aloud to develop fluency, but\nyou shouldn\u2019t put too much pressure on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip: <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have your reluctant reader read easy picture books to younger siblings or even a pet. There may be times\nwhere they want to read book after book. But also, times where they rather play\nwith toys or watch a movie.
