 Nancy, 12-years-old<\/em>, Math Level J<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

At 12-years-old, many\nwould say that Nancy\u2019s values are aligned with those of adults more than twice\nher age. While many of her peers count down the minutes to the end of the\nschool day, Nancy uses that time to challenge herself consistently \u2013 and that\ndoesn\u2019t stop when school bell rings. This sixth grader\u2019s week is packed with\njuggling numerous extracurricular activities and commitments. Although the\nactivities differ greatly, Nancy\u2019s focus and dedication remain consistent\nacross the board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has particularly developed a\nlove for Greek Classic Dance, a passion that she has pursued since just three\nyears old. Although Nancy is the youngest performer in her group, she channels\nher discipline and perseverance to keep up with her team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI break the dance steps into parts, just like\nin a math problem, in order to master the performance,\u201d said Nancy. \u201cEvery\nSunday, I look forward to going to dance practice because I enjoy learning\nsomething new or perfecting something old, just like I do each week in Kumon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nancy attributes much of her drive to her time\nin the Kumon Math Program<\/a>. Her parents\nenrolled her in Kumon when she was only six years old, and she has since advanced\nto studying three years beyond her grade level. A goal that keeps her motivated\nto finish the program, is the possibility of giving back and helping others\ndevelop a love for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cI want to finish the Kumon Math Program<\/a> early so that I\ncan become a Kumon Assistant,\u201d said Nancy. \u201cI learned that I want to give back to my peers by helping them better\nunderstand math.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she\u2019s\nnot perfecting her Greek Dance technique, Nancy also does competitive swimming\nand diving, competitive soccer and basketball, sings in a choir, and\nparticipates in band. One of her favorite activities though, is volunteering in\nher community, whether it is reading books to kindergarten classes, singing at\nnursing homes, or dancing at hospital fundraisers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nancy is committed to unlocking\nher full potential, no matter what she\u2019s doing. Beyond her hopes of becoming a\nKumon Assistant and Ambassador to help students better understand math, she has\nplans to continue helping others in a different way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom a very young age, I have always wanted\nto become an Orthodontist. My mom told me that I used to sit in front of a\nmirror, take a necklace, place it in front of my teeth and pretend I was\nwearing braces.\u201d said Nancy.  \u201cMy dream\nis to one day make braces accessible to everyone. A healthy and beautiful smile\nbenefits people both physically and mentally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no surprise that Nancy was\nchosen to attend Kumon\u2019s 3rd<\/sup> Annual Student Conference along with 55\nof her peers from across North America. She had the opportunity to travel to\nChicago with her family to connect with like-minded Kumon Students that share\nthe same passion for learning and growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a chance to speak with\nNancy about her passions, Kumon experience, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n

What do you enjoy\nmost about Kumon? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The challenge!\nKumon helps me stay motivated. The harder the level and the more challenging,\nthe more eager I am to finish. I stay motivated by knowing it is a challenge.\nKumon is helping me now and I know it will help me in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has Kumon\nhelped in the classroom?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Academically, Kumon has taught me to be a\nself-learner, work independently, identify mistakes and in essence, has helped\nme develop good learning habits in all subjects. I am more confident now in school\nand in life. Kumon has also taught me to be less stressed, to concentrate, and\nto focus more on an end result. Before I started Kumon, I always got distracted\neasily. Now, I organize my thoughts, accurately assess the situation and tackle\nthe problem head-on. Practice makes perfect. Repetition is key with everything\nin life. <\/p>\n\n\n

What achievements are you most proud of?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I am proud of all my achievements because I\nwork equally as hard for them. Kumon has taught me to always give it my 100%\nand to never give up. I have won Gold in Regional Swimming Freestyle Competitions,\nBronze in Regional Diving Competitions, School Banners in Soccer, Medals in\nBasketball, participated in the 3rd<\/sup> Annual Kumon Student Conference,\ncompleted the Red Cross Badge at the age of 10, but my proudest achievement of\nall, is one which I can pass down to my grandchildren \u2013 a book! In 2018 my poem\nentitled \u201cEBNDS\u201d, a rendition of \u201cMy School Life Experience,\u201d was chosen by the\nPoetry Institute of Canada to be published in their upcoming anthology of verse\n\u201cFriends of the Forest\u201d, National Library of Canada. Any achievement one does,\nbig or small, should always be celebrated!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t give up! You may not think it is\nimportant in the beginning, especially since you are doing addition and\nsubtraction which seem so easy, but once you get ahead of your classmates, you\nwill start to feel confident, worthy, and proud of your newly found math\nskills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nwas your experience like at the Student Conference, and what was your favorite\npart?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It was unforgettable and will be an experience\nI will cherish forever! I entered a ballroom full of positive energy, brilliant\nminds, and young students who share the same passion as me \u2013 math! All of the\nstudents were eager to share their thoughts and stories about their personal\nKumon experience. I met two new friends, whom I still keep in touch with to\nthis day. <\/p>\n\n\n

Who\nis your biggest inspiration and why?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My mom! Most\npeople would probably answer: Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela, Benjamin\nFranklin, Isaac Newton, or Tesla. Not me! My biggest inspiration is my mom. She\nis always there for me to inspire me, encourage me, praise me, feed me, love\nme, reprimand me, study with me, laugh with me, drive me, nurture me, motivate\nme, guide me and accept me! She is the one that waits in the Kumon waiting area\nfor me to finish and always asks, \u201chow did it go?\u201d I look forward to that question,\nbecause it shows how much my mom cares. I love my mom so much!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
