And now, your little\nlearner is starting to read on his own. Children who read\nindependently outside of school become better readers by developing vocabulary,\nreading comprehension and verbal fluency. They also tend to score higher on\nachievement tests across all subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow these tips to encourage your early learner to become an independent reader. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Start with short, simple books<\/strong> <strong>with large print.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading books with fewer words on each page is less intimidating to beginners. Designate a regular reading time.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will help your children get into the habit of reading regularly, and it will soon become part of their normal daily routine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Let them choose.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your children will be more motivated to read on their own if they choose books that interest them. When they finish a book, ask them questions that will help their comprehension, like \u201cWho was the story about?\u201d and \u201cWhat was your favorite part?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Don\u2019t stop reading to your child. <\/strong>Your children will enjoy listening to longer books that are a little more difficult. You can even read these books together, taking turns to read a sentence or a page each.
