After placing second\nlast year, these talented students earned the title as 2020 StudentCAM Contest\nWestern Division Champions.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The production of this award-winning documentary was a\nrewarding experience and touched on crucial topics like campaign finance and\npolitical corruption. \u201cI found it was a great opportunity to interact with\ncommunity leaders, professors, and politicians that help shape our laws and\npolicies,\u201d says Katherine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accomplishment isn\u2019t the first of Katherine\u2019s culturally\nbased awards. Her first award in a language-based competition dates to 2018\nwhen she first started attending the Japanese Language School of Long Beach and\nplaced first in the 2018 Japanese Speech Contest. She also won third place at the\n2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jas-socal.org\/JapanBowl\" aria-label=\"Japan Bowl of California\">Japan Bowl of California<\/a>,\nwhich is a Japanese Language &amp; Culture Team Competition for high school\nstudents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japanese language has always been special to Katherine.\nNot only is she able to communicate in Japanese but she is intrigued by\nlearning about the culture and background.&nbsp;\nIn the summer of 2018, her family had the opportunity to host a cultural\nexchange student from Japan. Her exchange student, Himawari, was from the city\nof Yokkaichi, which is in Mie prefecture. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180723173436454_COVER-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180723173436454_COVER-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180723173436454_COVER-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMeeting her opened\nmy eyes to new perspectives. Since my Japanese and her English were not perfect,\nwe had to communicate on the basic human level of body language and learn each\nother&#8217;s languages along the way,\u201d says Katherine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHima taught me the value of trust and how to be a more\ntolerant person. Her visit had such an impact on the whole family. She fueled\nour curiosity and motivation to go to Japan and learn more about her culture as\nshe did with mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katherine has always been inspired by learning. For this\nreason, she considers The Kumon Method essential to daily life, especially when\nsomeone is preparing to enter the workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing able to figure out solutions to a problem in Kumon\ncan parallel problem solving in the real world,\u201d says Katherine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Kumon, our mission aims to foster sound, capable\nindividuals who are able to independently carve out a path for themselves in\nlife. Katherine does just that. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/KATIE1-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/KATIE1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.kumon.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/KATIE1.jpg 406w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Get to know a bit\nmore about Katherine\u2019s Kumon experience and her future goals below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How has Kumon helped you academically?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In school, I do not even have to worry about my math classes\nanymore. After studying with Kumon for eight years, if there is a new concept\nin math class, I am either quick to remember it from Kumon, or pick it up from\nthe example in less than a couple of minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The quick math skills I learned from Kumon make it easier\nfor me to shop in stores. Whenever my mom and I compare sale prices, I calculate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is your biggest inspiration and why?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>My biggest inspiration is my dad who is a Software QA\nEngineer. He is tech savvy and always up to date with technology. When I grow\nup, I would also like to still be in touch with the latest trends like my dad.\nHe is also somewhat of a \u201cnerd\u201d and has influenced me into gaming and famous\ncomic franchises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you first start progressing in Kumon, it will get more\ndifficult. Just know that the learning process will take time, but ultimately,\nit will all be worth it.
