Tarun, 17-years-old<\/em>, Math Program Completer & Reading Program\nCompleter<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Tarun enrolled in Kumon at the early age of five, it\nimmediately sparked his passion for learning \u2013 especially for math. After\nenrolling, he found that he was much more confident in his ability to take on\nany challenge. Tarun\u2019s tenacity shone through and acted as a catalyst as he\nwent on to successfully complete the Kumon Math Program<\/a> in six years,\nand the Kumon Reading Program<\/a> only a year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarun loves to share his passion for math with others. He dedicates\ncountless hours to spreading knowledge to younger students who are interested\nin competition math, or who simply want to progress in school.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he started working with these younger students, Tarun\nnoticed that certain children had a mental block preventing them from\nprogressing to new concepts. He will never forget when one particular student\ntold him that he \u201chad a monster,\u201d one that made solving mathematical problems\nalmost impossible for him. It was that very student who inspired him to write\nhis first book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first, this remark was humorous, and we laughed and\nmoved on immediately. That night, I realized what he said may be a problem for\nmany kids around the globe. I then realized that I could potentially make an\nimpact on these children by displaying the strategies to defeat monsters in a\nway they would understand,\u201d said Tarun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI then started on The\nNumber Monster<\/em><\/a>. Writing the book was an enjoyable process, and I always\nkept that one student in mind. I wanted to show\nstudents who struggle with math that they have the potential to succeed in\nmath, especially if they reach out to their teachers for help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The
Number Monster<\/em><\/a> recently won first place for best eBook on \u201cSchool Issues\u201d in the 2020
Purple Dragonfly Book Awards Contest<\/a>. While The
Number Monster<\/em><\/a>is his first published title, he hopes to write a sequel soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tarun hopes readers walk away with a powerful lesson that\ncould be applied both in and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope that readers feel that they never have to be afraid\nto ask for help in times of stress. \nThough my book depicts a small boy who is scared of math, it connects to\nbigger problems that youth face in their lives,\u201d said Tarun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAsking for help may be difficult due to anxiety or\nembarrassment, but it truly is the optimal decision, as it allows you to\novercome challenges and make new friends in the process. Raj found help in his\nteacher in The\nNumber Monster<\/em><\/a>, but this idea doesn\u2019t just apply to math; it applies to\nlife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All profits raised from Tarun\u2019s  book will be donated to UNICEF\nand The Conscious Kid<\/a>. Tarun’s\nbook has garnered positive reviews from parents and is working to develop a\nrelationship with Hip Hop Public Health<\/a>, an\norganization building health equity amongst children through the transformative\npower of music, art, and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did you enjoy\nmost about Kumon?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I enjoyed that Kumon offered the opportunity to advance\nbeyond my grade level, which greatly improved my drive and work ethic. Kumon\ninstilled in me a newfound love for learning, as well as a greater confidence\nto participate in school. This allowed me to form better relationships with\nteachers and to establish connections with past students at my center that have\nprovided me with great friendships to this day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has Kumon helped\nyou outside of the classroom and now as a writer?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Kumon helped me discover my true passion \u2013 math. I fell in\nlove with the subject at a young age and this persisted even through\nchallenging long division equations. Outside of the classroom, I have learned\nthe importance of teaching others who share your passions. I have devoted\nhundreds of hours to spreading knowledge to younger students who are interested\nin competition math, or simply want to progress in their school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some of your\ngoals as an author?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My primary goal is to make students feel that it is normal\nto have a monster in their lives that prevents them from learning with\nclassmates. There are ways to conquer your fears of academic topics, as your\nteacher is always there to help you. Also, carrying-over is a difficult process\nto master, and I hope that my presentation aids students in embracing the topic\nmore easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the most beneficial thing you learned during your Kumon\njourney?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It is quite difficult\nto try to rank the many skills that I gained from Kumon. Grammar, factorization,\nor vocabulary all come to mind; however, my ultimate takeaway from Kumon was my\nlifelong love for learning. Every day, I find myself curious to gain knowledge\nthat I didn\u2019t know about the day before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could sum up\nyour Kumon experience in one word, what would it be? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you\ngive to kids just starting Kumon? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

At first you will advance at an unbelievable rate, but I\npromise you there will come a time when you face what seems like insurmountable\nchallenges in your learning. At that point, you must have the mindset that you\ncan move past that stage, but the effort required will be greater than ever\nbefore. I promise, every ounce of work that you pour into Kumon will be worth\nit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any other information\nyou\u2019d like to share about yourself or your Kumon experience?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If I had a say, all students should give Kumon a try. It is\nby no means easy, but I assure you it will all pay off in the end both in\nschool and in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
