\u201cIt\u2019s the most wonderful time of the year!\u201d And no, we\u2019re not\ntalking about the holiday season. For most parents, back-to-school time is\neagerly anticipated. This year, however, many parents across North America are\napprehensive about, and even dreading, back-to-school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one is quite sure what school will look like this year.\nSome large school districts in the United States have already decided to stick\nwith remote learning for the fall, while others have committed to a mixed\napproach of in-school and remote classes. Others still have committed to\nholding fully in-person classes. The uncertainty has left parents confused and\nconcerned about what their children\u2019s education will look like, and how they\ncan help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When schools closed in the spring, it was assumed to be a\ntemporary situation. Many parents were home with their children, as businesses\nwere closed and parents either could not go to work or worked from home. Now,\nas remote learning looks to be a permanent solution in many school districts\nfor the upcoming school year, parents are left to wonder how they can support\ntheir children and ensure that they receive the best education possible under\nthe circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some suggestions on how to make the most out of your\nchild\u2019s remote learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n

1.Don\u2019t Expect Perfection.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Even schools\nwith comprehensive resources acknowledge that a forced switch to remote learning\nis not ideal. Every family\u2019s situation is different, and it\u2019s likely you will\nface obstacles in this new experience. Both you and your child\u2019s teacher are\nlearning this new way of teaching, and the experience likely will not be as\nrobust as what your child would have had in school \u2013 and that\u2019s okay. Children\nare remarkably resilient and can recover from missed milestones or a\nless-than-perfect grade. Acknowledge that this is an unusual situation, and grade\nyourself (and them) on a curve!<\/p>\n\n\n

2. Customize your Child\u2019s Learning Environment.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

There are some\npositives to remote learning, including the ability to customize your child\u2019s\nlearning environment and experience. If your child has difficulty staying still\nin at typical school environment, try setting up a standing desk or stationary\nbike in their at-home study area. Exercise bikes can help\nkids who have trouble focusing<\/a> release stress and self-regulate, leading to\nbetter learning. Even the colors you use in their study area can have a\npositive impact. The color green, for example, has\nbeen shown<\/a> to promote restfulness and calm, and can even improve focus. Add\na plant for an extra boost, as studies have also shown that natural\nenvironments help children learn<\/a>. However you set up your child\u2019s learning\nspace, try to limit distractions as much as possible and ensure that they can\nbe as comfortable as possible \u2013 but not so comfortable that they fall asleep!<\/p>\n\n\n

3. Don\u2019t Teach. Help Them Understand.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Without easy\naccess to their teachers, your child will probably heavily rely on you for help\nwith their schoolwork. Providing support and guidance is great, but don\u2019t\noverdo it! Instead, help your child figure out the problem on their own. Give\ntips and hints, but don\u2019t provide the answer unless they\u2019re truly stuck. This\nmethod of assistance, which helps develop a child\u2019s ability\nto self-learn<\/a>, is a key component of Kumon. It\u2019s\nalso a great way to help your child get the most out of their schoolwork. They\nwill learn to persevere through challenges and will feel a much greater sense\nof accomplishment when they solve tough problems all on their own!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Praise your Child<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Praise can\nbe a great motivator<\/a> for children. Provide meaningful feedback and be\nspecific in your praise. Commend your child\u2019s actions, not just their\nachievements. And be positive about mistakes! Let them know that mistakes help\nthem learn<\/a>, and praise them when they are able to correct their errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Check in with their Teachers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Speaking frequently with your child\u2019s teachers can be\nmutually beneficial. You will learn how best to work with your child, and the\nteachers will get useful feedback that can help them improve their lesson\nplanning and overall support. Remember, you\u2019re in this together. Building a\nstrong relationship with your child\u2019s teachers can ensure that you are able to\novercome the rough patches and find solutions to your remote learning problems.<\/p>\n\n\n

6. Consider Micro-schooling<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The previous\ntips are great for parents who are able to stay home with their children and\nprovide individual attention during school hours. But we know that\u2019s simply not\nthe case for many parents. That\u2019s why some parents are considering\nmicro-schooling<\/a>. With micro-schooling, families form small groups of about\nfour to twelve kids and work together under the direction of a parent or tutor.\nThis allows students to still benefit from social interaction while lessening\nthe childcare burden on individual parents. There is a lot to consider with\nmicro-schooling, such as an increased risk of exposure to COVID-19 and the\nchallenges of how to handle students in different grades with different\nteachers, but it could be a useful option for many families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever you do, remember that this is a new experience for\nalmost everyone. Your child\u2019s school, teachers, and peers will be working to\nfigure this out along with you and your family. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask for help,\nand remember to be patient. Back-to-school time may no longer seem like the\nmost wonderful time of the year, but that doesn\u2019t mean it can\u2019t still be a\npositive experience for all. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
