It was a familiar routine: in the weeks before school\nstarted, you would go shopping for school supplies, help your kids pick out the\nperfect new outfits, and give them a big wave and a smile as the school bus\npicked them up on the first day of class. Year after year, your routine stayed\nthe same. But if you\u2019re like many parents, you may be questioning whether it\neven makes sense for your kids to go back to school at all this year\u2014at least\nin the traditional sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More parents than ever are considering homeschooling their\nchildren this fall. In one study, as many as 60% of\nparents<\/a> said they were thinking of homeschooling their kids, with 40%\nseriously considering it<\/a>. Even if only a small portion of those families decide\nto homeschool their kids in 2020, it\u2019ll still be a huge increase over the\nestimated 3% of families who homeschooled their children before this school\nyear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re concerned about the potential health risks of\nsending your child to school, aren\u2019t confident in your school\u2019s remote learning\nplan, or just want to take more control over your child\u2019s learning, here are\nsome things to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n

Weigh Your Options<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Homeschooling is not the same as remote learning. With remote\nlearning, your children study what\u2019s presented to them from their school,\nwhether that\u2019s done with virtual study or simply using worksheet packets sent\nto your home. With homeschooling, you<\/em>\nare the teacher. That means you\u2019ll have to determine your own lesson plans and\nfigure out what your child should work on each day. That can be a daunting task\nfor parents with no background in teaching. However, homeschooling also gives\nyou a great amount of flexibility. You\u2019re not tied to studying within school\nhours, which means that you can schedule learning around your work hours if you\nneed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you decide to start homeschooling your child, it\u2019s\nimportant that you recognize the commitment involved. If you\u2019re concerned that\nyour children won\u2019t learn enough with virtual school, would supplementing their\nlearning with other programs be a better option than homeschooling full-time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check your State\u2019s Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Once you decide for sure that you want to homeschool, you\nmust check your state\u2019s legal requirements<\/a>.\nSome states simply require you to withdraw from your local school system before\nstarting to homeschool. Others, like New York, have much stricter rules, such\nas submitting quarterly\ninstruction plans<\/a>. Make sure you\u2019re prepared to meet all the requirements\nbefore the school year begins.<\/p>\n\n\n

Choose a Program<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The next step is\nto choose an appropriate curriculum for your child. Luckily, you won\u2019t have to\nstart from scratch. There are many options\nto choose from<\/a> that suit children of different ages and with a variety of\nlearning styles. Select an option that will work for you and your children, and\nmake sure it fits your goals. If your plan is to reenroll your kids in their\nlocal school district once things return to normal, you may want to stick to a\ncurriculum that\u2019s similar to what they were doing in school. But remember that\nhomeschooling offers you more flexibility, so you may not want to replicate the\nin-school experience too closely and lose some of that freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supplement the Curriculum<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Just because you\u2019ve chosen a program to stick to, doesn\u2019t\nmean you can\u2019t find additional ways to supplement your children\u2019s learning.\nThere are numerous free educational apps and programs that can help your\nchildren learn additional subjects or focus on areas of interest. Duolingo<\/a>, for example, is a great free\noption to help your kids learn a language. Apps like Coding\nSafari<\/a> or Kodable<\/a> can help even\npreschoolers learn to code, while apps like Loopimal<\/a> and Sago Mini Music Box can\ncultivate young musicians\u2019 creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents looking for more structured supplemental options can\nalso consider programs like Kumon. Kumon\nStudents study at their own pace, which means students often end up studying\nbeyond their own grade level, leaving more time to focus on their areas of\ninterest. Many Kumon Centers are offering virtual class in addition to\nin-center classes, so it\u2019s a great option if you\u2019re looking for flexibility.  Your child will build confidence, focus, and\ndetermination while improving their math, reading, and motor skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be Social<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Homeschooling doesn\u2019t have to be a solo affair. There are\nmany homeschooling\ngroups<\/a> on social media that can help you connect with other homeschooling\nfamilies. You can learn from parents who have been homeschooling for years and\nget advice from parents in similar situations to yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also consider joining a homeschooling\nco-op<\/a>. Homeschooling co-ops have traditionally been used to help\nhomeschooled children socialize and learn in different ways. They\u2019re similar to\nthe micro-schooling\ntrend<\/a> that many parents are considering this fall, but unlike some\nmicro-schools that plan to focus on the school district\u2019s curriculum, are\nspecifically designed for homeschooling families. <\/p>\n\n\n

Have Fun<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget to\nhave fun! Remember that homeschooling does not have to mimic traditional\nschool. Playing games, exploring nature, and encouraging your child\u2019s\ncreativity through art and music can be just as educational as traditional\nlearning. You may find that your child excels when they balance structured\nlearning, like their homeschooling curriculum and doing Kumon worksheets, with\nmore nontraditional activities that allow them to focus on their interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision to homeschool your children should not be made lightly. There\u2019s a lot to consider, including whether you intend for this to be a temporary solution or a long-term change. The flexibility that homeschooling offers can be very appealing, but it requires a big commitment.
