Whether you\u2019re\nconsidering separating from your school district completely and homeschooling\nyour children, or are just looking for something to supplement your child\u2019s\nvirtual school day, we\u2019ve broken down four of the most popular learning options\nfor you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homeschooling  <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Homeschooling<\/a>\nis not a part-time solution. With homeschooling, you <\/em>are the teacher. You must select a curriculum, lesson\nplan, and most importantly, instruct your children. With this responsibility,\ncomes a great deal of freedom. You can control what your child is learning, how\nthey learn, and when they have structured lessons. Since you don\u2019t have to\nfollow the school\u2019s curriculum, you can focus on subject areas and teaching\nstyles that suit your child\u2019s individual needs. And if normal school hours\ndon\u2019t work for your family, you can choose a different time for your kids sit\ndown for class that is compatible with your schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homeschooling is a great option for families looking for a\ncomplete alternative to the school curriculum. Because it\u2019s an established\nlearning method, there are countless resources available for new homeschooling\nparents. However, homeschooling is also a huge commitment. Families must commit\nto the new way of learning full-time, and parents should be prepared for the\nchallenges that teaching presents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning Pods<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Learning Pods, also known as micro-schools, are formed by\nseveral families who study a chosen curriculum together. Learning Pods can take\nseveral forms, but are often supervised and led by a certified teacher or\ntutor. Many learning pods teach the school\u2019s curriculum, providing an\nalternative to students who would otherwise have to learn the material alone at\nhome. Students in these learning pods complete the assignments that their\nschool teacher gives them, under the guidance of the pod\u2019s teacher.  This allows students to benefit from\nin-person instruction and social interaction with their learning pod\nclassmates. Less commonly, learning pods may follow an independent program\ninstead of the school curriculum, similar to homeschooling, but with the added\nbenefit of everyday social interaction for the students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning pods are an ideal option for families who are\nconcerned about their children missing the guidance of a teacher when they\ncontinue with virtual learning in the fall. Students benefit from working with\ntheir peers as they would in a normal school environment, while being guided by\na qualified teacher or tutor. Most learning pods also require families to agree\nto social distancing rules for everyday life to ensure the health and safety of\nall the students in the pod. One negative about learning pods, however, can be\nthe cost.  As attendees must pay the\nteacher\u2019s salary, learning pods can be quite expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supplemental Programs <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Supplemental programs like Kumon are not a replacement or alternative to a school curriculum. As the name implies, they\u2019re instead meant to supplement<\/em> the school curriculum. Kumon, in particular, offers an independent curriculum that takes children from counting through calculus and from pre-reading skills to advanced reading comprehension. Kumon Students develop confidence, determination, and the ability to self-learn in the program, all skills that will help them excel in school\u2014whether school is held virtually or in-person. Students fill in any gaps in their learning and advance at their own pace, allowing many students to study above their school grade level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supplemental programs are a good option for families who are\nconcerned their children missed material due to remote learning, or who are\nlooking for their children to get ahead before they return to the classroom. Programs\nlike Kumon can be completed in as little as 15-30 minutes a day (per subject,)\nso they\u2019re also great for families who want to fit some extra learning in their\nkids\u2019 days without overwhelming them. They\u2019re also a more affordable option\nthan full-time programs. However, if you\u2019re looking for a complete replacement to\nyour school curriculum or a childcare option for your kids, these programs may\nnot be right for you on their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distance Learning Camps<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Distance learning camps offer virtual learning support for\nfamilies during the school day. They\u2019re run by small businesses, community\ncenters, or daycares, and offer childcare for families whose children are learning\nremotely. Children visit the camp during the day, where they complete their\nnormal schoolwork under adult supervision. When run by small businesses like\nkarate or dance studios, students can also choose to take additional classes\nthat are offered by the studio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a great option for families who need childcare during the day due to work or other obligations. Parents can be assured that their children will complete their schoolwork under the guidance of an adult. They may also have the opportunity to benefit from extracurricular activities, like karate or dance classes.
